British tabloid The Mail on Sunday
states in article today that Katie Leung, the 17-year-old Scottish actress playing Cho Chang in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has become "a hate figure for obsessive fans" on the Internet.
In the article titled Harry Potter and the Poisoned Chalice the author goes on to say “cores of fake websites have sprung up, some apparently giving her thoughts and feelings in diary form. There are photographs purporting to be of Katie, and many are of obviously older, more experienced girls in revealing poses. Most disturbing are several 'hate Katie' sites where youngsters are encouraged to explain in graphic detail why they loathe the dark-haired beauty."
Katie’s father is quoted as saying:
I have seen these sites. I have looked at every one of them. It is rather frightening when you see things like "hate Katie." It is incredible, really. I can't make sense of it, although I know how popular Harry Potter is. Katie is only 17 and hasn't even appeared on film. No one knows her, has seen her or heard her speak, yet there are all these things on the Internet. Unfortunately I know she has seen them, too. She reads them all and it is a great pressure on her. With these websites, I cannot even think what may happen when the film eventually comes out. In a way I'm dreading it. She's been told she mustn't give interviews or speak to anybody until the producers say it's time. It's all happened so fast.

Dump her!! if i was harry i wouldn't fall for her. if millions of girls auditioned, don't you think they would pick someone a little prettier and with acting talent? However, they could have done worse. We'll just need to see her performance.

She is not how i pictured her but, if she got the part out of millions of girls, then, rock on! she must have been outstanding. and since harry potter is an outstanding series, then you go girl! performance is the ticket, not the looks of the person.

It mentioned she might not be in five in the article, but the Cho/Harry relationship develops and falls apart in book five so I don't know why they wouldn't keep her. I hope all goes well for her and people stop being so judgemental over someone they don't know.

I agree with the other posters who think this is going overboard. I feel sorry for Katie. She's just playing a character in a movie. It sounds like she got the part fair and square. All of us who've read the books already know what happens between Cho and Harry. I just don't get what the big deal is that people feel the need to lambast(e) sp? her.
By the way, I never got the impression from the books that Cho was model beautiful. Harry thinks she's teriffic and we see her through his eyes. I figured she was just a normal student who was cute. I think Katie is fine.
