The American Library Association, through its Association for Library Service to Children division, released a recommended reading list
today for Harry Potter fans waiting impatiently for the July 16 release of the sixth JK Rowling novel in the series.
The list was created by children's librarians using the following criteria: "books that have similar story elements and replicate accessibility, tone and flavor; and books that are similar in theme but may be more complex."
Included in the first is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series. More "complex" novels included Michael Ende's The Neverending Story, C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, Madaleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time and Christopher Paolini's Eragon.

A personal favorite of mine is Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. The subject matter and amazingly rich fantasy worlds and creatures are akin to why I love Harry Potter. Highly recommended (it's on the ALA's list, too!).

I was young when I read the Neverending Story and The Chronicles of Narnia. I have grown up reading most of these books, so I would recommend them to everyone young and old.

I might check out these books after H-BP, but I will be too busy re-reading the first five Harry Potter books to find time to read them pre-release.

I have ERAGON but haven't read it yet, too many other things on my plate and now I see the second one is due out (if it isn't already). I haven't read NEVERENDING STORY, but I have real all the others. I do enjoy the Artemis Fowl books, too. They're a different aura from the Harry Potter books, but quite entertaining.
But, like PotterFan5, I am busy right now rereading the other books. I'm stalling on OotP for a week or two to get closer to the release date for HBP.
Lord of the Rings is fantastic. It was my first introduction to this type of fantasy a very, very long time ago. I about have them memorized, but still reread them once or twice a year.

I've only seen the Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events movie, but have not read the books. I've also read all the Chronicles of Narnia series.

I just finished the first two books of "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. I think those are good books to read while waiting for the sixth book. They both have alot of adventure and the series is 7 books the same as Harry Potter. So yeah that is a good one.

I read The Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle In Time, and the Lord of the Rings as a pre-teen. Hmm was that really 25 years ago? Ouch. Anyway, I think it's great that they are coming up with book lists for the younger crowd to encourage more reading. One of the best things about the potter series was it got more kids into reading-and loving it! I restarted and finished the HP series much fater than I expected, now I am reading fanfic. Can't wait till 7/15!!!!

Again, this is nice to see and not totally unexpected. I love to see young readers getting involved with reading. There are many earlier writings that I grew up with that many would enjoy today.

I wish that I could be a librarian, especially one that caters to children! It would be great to inspire a love of knowledge and research in children. I have always had a deep love for reading, and will try to apply for a masters in information science in pursuit of my dream.

I have always loved Harry Potter and since the beginning I have read and reread the books and watched the movies and I'm not sure what I'd do when they're all done with the books and the movies are all completed. I will of course live and I really like reading some of Madeline L'Engle's books but nothing compares to Harry Potter

I've decided to just re read the first Harry Potter books while I wait!! If I start a new book, expecially one with a similar feel, my brain gets all confused!!
I have however, read the Cronicals of Narnia when I was little and I loved them!! I think their making a movie based on The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe!!

thanks, but no thanks.
i vowed not to read ANYTHING untill HBP comes out. only magazines and such.
i dont want to start something and not finish it because of HBP. also i just want to read HBP this summer and nothing else (besides my books required for school).
but i read most of those recommended books anyways:
~Unfortunate Events (great if you want something in relation to HP!)
~Chronicles of Narnia (AWESOME!)
~A Wrinkle in Time (CONFUSING!)

Hmm... Sounds pretty neat! I definately DON'T like a series of unfortuanate events!! But I do like the Cronicles of Narnia and was thinking about the Neverending Story and A Wrinkle in Time. I read Gone With the WInd and that DEFINATELY occupied me through a HP break that my freinds and English teacher begged me to take. So i would recomend Gone with the wind...I liked it. It took me about a week and a half. Its 1034 pages. It might take you 25 days...
