In a brief interview to discuss
his new movie opening this week, The Constant Gardener, Ralph Fiennes discusses not knowing any thing about Harry Potter and how he got into his evil character.
So you've been cast as Lord Voldemort. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I can't claim to be a Harry Potter fan, certainly before. Now, I guess I'm in the family a bit. But I didn't know much about who he was, so I had to do my research…. I wasn't really familiar with the whole world of Harry Potter. But I'm now very familiar with Lord Voldemort because [in low, evil voice] I am Lord Voldemort.
How do you prepare for a character that's pure evil? It's the hardest thing in the world to play pure, pure evil. I still don't know what it is.
Did you study other evil characters? We just talked about different levels of psychotic madness in people when you don't quite know what someone's gonna do. They could do anything -- they could slash your throat, they could put their arm around you and offer to be your best friend, and the next thing you know they turn really nasty. That sort of terrifying thing you see and read about.

I don't much care for Ralph Fiennes as an actor but he comes across as a fairly intelligent adult in his interview. Though its hard to imagine that anyone could only have become familar with Harry Potter through a movie....

I can definitely see what he's trying to say. Most evil characters have major cases of PMS. LV's got the mood swings, though somehow it would be hard to picture him crying through a chick flick while scarfing chocolate ice cream...

Always welcome new HP fans even if they are late comers. I think the best part about it is that he will basically appear as he is, no distorted face or anything. The craziest people all looke totally normal, so I think it will make the effect even that much more vivid. By now though, I'm sure most of us have our own image of Voldemort brought out through the books, so those probably are so deeply embedded that they won't change.

I don't think he had to be a previous Harry Potter fan to become LV, he will do amazing, because he did his research and he is a very talented actor. He was INCREDIBLE in Red Dragon, and I'm sure he will bring that talent to the screen in GoF!!

Ralph will be an excellent Lord Voldemort - I have no doubts about that and if you've seen Red Dragon you don't either. He's a great actor and I think he'll make this character come alive and be every bit as evil as we've imagined him to be.
