JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, has updated
her web site with a warning to all her fans about the fraudulent number of autographed & unauthorised items that have appeared for sale on eBay.
From the update:
A recent perusal of the e-Bay stocks of 'signed' Harry Potter merchandise was quite alarming for the person who allegedly signed these stacks of books, posters and even, in one case, an unauthorised biography that I would never, and have never, put my signature to. As far as I could tell on the day I dropped in, only one of the signatures on offer appeared genuine. There seem to be a lot of people out there trying to con Harry Potter fans. The same is true in respect to the huge number of unauthorised Harry Potter e-Books and audio digital files that users of e-Bay have offered for sale to Harry Potter fans.
I would be delighted if the online community of Harry Potter fans canvassed e-Bay directly, asking that they be protected against this exploitation.

I would never buy anything like that on ebay. If I had a copy signed by JKR, I wouldn't put it up on sale on ebay so why would other people?

There will always be people out there who are willing to exploit others. I think it's great that she is warning people who are not very clued up on it! I wouldn't want to get an autograph off a website, I'd only want one if JKR gave it to me personally, it would mean more then.

I think it's great that JKR has warned us about the con artists on ebay, but as we all know, we cant stop all of them, and besides I'd rather be given an autograph by the actual person themselves, NOT off the internet!

Don't buy signed tings or things of any much value on e-bay full stop. You just can't know and it's not worth the risk.

I don't think that JKR is completely right!
She doesn't have the time to be looking at Ebay with the 110 Million dollars she has, when she can buy anywhere.
There are excellent products and official products in ebay, because it is ebays job to filter out the frauds. I have purchase a lot of HP T-shirts and they all have the WB tag on them making it official.
I Don't beleive this add is correct!

I think that that is really stupid. I can't think of the though of buying an allegedlly signed book from JKR and then finding out that it is not really real and that I payed a fortune for it. That is just really mean.

I am glad we were warned about this! I saw an ebay cd audio copy for $5! I was tempted, then I saw the fine print that it was supposed to be a backup copy only if you already owned it...so it was illegal but sneaky; so I didn't buy it.
I often shop on ebay, so I will be careful!

Anyone who is a diehard Harry Potter fan would know that stuff is fake, because she's mentioned that she rarely ever signs books. Still, it's despicable that people would try to scam others like that.
