TIME For Kids has chosen Harry Potter author JK Rowling as their Person of the Year for 2005.
Ms. Rowling beat out Lance Armstrong, ordinary heroes (from the tsunami, hurricane Katrina and the earthquake that effected Afghanistan, India and Pakistan) and the Chicago White Sox.
Rowling missed out on being TIME magazine's Person of the Year for 2005. That honor went to Bill and Melinda Gates and Bono from U2 for their tireless fight against AIDS and global poverty.

Cool. I was a little sad when I saw this morning that Bono, along with Mr and Mrs Gates were selected for the adult "Persons of the Year," and I didn't even realize that Time had one for kids. This is great.

fooch48 - I think Bill Gates deserved it more. He has given a greater portion of his wealth to charity than J.K. has, after all.

Congrats to her! It's really amazing when you think about it. Most other authors don't get recognized when it comes to being heroes! Way to go JK!!!

Congrats to JK getting the Kids version.
Bono and the Gates do deserve the adult one though. Although JK has touched millions with her wit and charm, Bono and the Gates have and will touch billions through their compassionate and tireless work to help those less fortunate than them.

She deserves it. It's daunting to think about how much she has changed the world. I bet the publishers who turned her down are kicking themselves right now.

Congrats to her! That's a big honor to have. Too bad she didn't win TIME's Person of the Year. Who did win though? I didn't see.

I certainly believe she deserved it! With the book and movie having great success this year, and her ability to make kids such as my brother start to read, is truly inspiring!

That was a very good choice, she has done so much for children (and adults) all over the world. Getting people to read is one of the biggest gifts you can give as it has such an incredibly positive effect on people and can really make you grow as a person and intellectually. Go JK!!!

At least she made the Time for Kids. That's brilliant. She didn't make Time though, it was Bill Gates, his wife, and the Irish rocker Bono. It's all right here in this hyperlink: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10516674/. Too bad she only made one and not both.
By the way, the rocker dude is from U2. People today have no sense in who to pick for People of the Year. I mean, this is JK Rowling, the person who introduced the greatest storybook character ever. She shoulda definetly won.
chadick, she won't win the other because the U2 singer and Bill Gates and his wife won. Here's the website: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10516674/.

Well, I think it's only normal for J.K.R to be their "Person of the Year"!
Congratulations, Jo!!! :D
On the other hand, I think the poll was a little too eclectic!... -In my opinion, the "Heroes in Times of Need" should belong to another top, "hors concours"!!
