In a debate on literature and the curriculum famous authors such as Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Philip Pullman have created
lists of books that all pupils should read. At the top of Ms. Rowling's list are Wuthering Heights and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Their lists were published in the yearly issue of Royal Society of Literature magazine
.
Anthony Gardner, editor of the magazine said:
My impression is that when you are recommending books for children there are books that have stood the test of time and are always going to be popular ... but inevitably people are always going to want to make an effort to keep children in touch with what is being written at the moment.

Wow, two of my favorite authors ever!! Looking at the list i have already read Animal Farm and sadly that is it. Most of the books on there i have to read for my honors class english anyway so I think that there is a reason why they were on the list.

Sorry for the double post, but I couldn't help it. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favourite books! I can't believe she likes that book, too! Maybe I'll re-read it to kill time for Harry Potter 7.

It's very interesting to see what other books she reccomends. I absolutely love "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". I read it as a child and have loved the book ever since. "To Kill A Mocking Bird" was one of the only books I read last year in school, "Hamlet" is one of my favorite Shakespearean plays, and I remember a lot of "Animal Farm" from my freshman year. Those are good books that she has chosen.

I've actually read some of them books, they were required for school. I actually really liked to kill a mockingbird, even though the title sounds incredibly dumb.

JK Rowling must have something going on with my school. Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Catcher in the Rye were all books that I had to read last year when I was in 9th grade. I liked The Catcher in the Rye, and I also liked To Kill a Mockingbird. They were good books.

I have to say as an adult and an educator, that it's wonderful that Rowling publishes a list like this. Especially when I come on here and see so many young people saying that they plan to read these books because Rowling recommended them. It's really wonderful.
