Contrary to a most recent report
, Warner Bros. has just confirmed to us that Gary Oldman will be reprising his role as Sirius Black for the fifth film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Additionally, David Thewlis is also confirmed to return and reprise his role as Remus Lupin.
Both actors are expected to start filming later this summer.
UPDATE: HPANA has learned that despite this announcement, no contract has been presented to or signed with Gary Oldman. Details here.

Honestly, I did really like that they had casted Gary and David in PoA (they're great actors, but I didn't think they looked at all the parts). Still, now that they know the characters and are the film characters, it would be so bad if they had changed the actors. It was bad enough when they had no choice but to change the actor for DD, but if they had done it without excuse, that would have been ridiculous.

Continuity is one of the mostr important aspects in the filming as far as I'm concerned. Dumbledore changing was odd as disconcerting for me so I would like that sort of thing to be avoided as much as possible.

That's great news ! When I heard that Gary Oldman wasn't going to return, I was hoping it was only a rumor. OOTP wouldn't be complete without the Harry-Sirius relationship.

What a relief to hear that Oldman will be back as Sirius. I am so happy that they are keeping the same actors. It would absolutely ruin the films if they changed any of the actors (Dumbledore aside as that was a necessity).
Oh, and just incase WB has any idea of changing the actors, well, they could pass for their character ages with no problems, so there is no need to do anything other than cast them for the remaining two movies.
I'll use Beverly Hills 90210 as an example here - the character of the blonde kid (with the rich mum) was 16 or so, and was played by a 31 year old actor!!! In terms of height/size - I've been the height I am now (5'7") since I was 14, and one of my guy friends was 6'3" when he was 15 (friend of the family was 5'6" when he was 12!). Dan is shorter than the teachers so he will always look school aged, and they are still young so they will look young for a few more years.
And the other point re number of movies - well, how many James Bond Movies did Sean Connery do? (I have no idea but I know there were a fair few). There are three more movies to go, so please please have all the same actors all the way through. We have grown with them over the last 4 films, so the half way point is passed. If the actors are kept the same, then we will continue the journey with them and the magic will not be broken.

Those are Awesome news to hear, I am glad Gary Oldman and David Thewlis decided to reprised their roles...I just can't picture anyone else playing Sirius or Lupin...they were great in POA and I can't wait to see them again.

It'll be sad if they got re-cast, and my best friend loves (not crushing)Sirius, and when I told her what happens at the end of Book 5 (just spoiler safety), she got really sad...but she's planning on seeing Movie 5 anyways. So yeah, like I said in a bunch of other comments I made (Katie coming back; Tonks, Luna, etc. get casted, etc.), I can't wait until the OotP movie comes out!!!
