Black Family Tree Crest

Additional details of Rowling's Black Family Tree Popular (11085)

FEBRUARY 20, 2006 at 9:45 PM

Posted by EUDAEMONIA
Source: HP Lexicon via The Leaky Cauldron

Tonight in London, the Black Family Tree that Harry Potter author JK Rowling sketched and donated to Book Aid International was on display for the public to preview before tomorrow's auction. A report by a fan who attended the preview is now available online, with additional names and details that were previously withheld.

Here's a tidbit of the fan report regarding those seven names that were burned-off -- the "black sheep", as mentioned in Order of the Phoenix (numbered to match with those marks on this image of the tree):

  1. (Phineus' youngest sibling) Isla Black, who 'married muggle Bob Hitchens'. I thought immediately of Bob Hoskins, and concluded he was Cockney!
  2. (Phineus' 2nd child) another Phineus, who 'supported muggle rights'
  3. (Dorea's brother) Marius, 'a squib'. That really cut me up, it's hard to explain, what a life for him - not!
  4. This you'll love: Callidora and Charis' sister: Cedrella, who 'married Septimus Weasley'. She'd have been born around 1918, so Septimus is probably an uncle of Arthur, and of course a 7th son. She was struck off just for marrying a blood traitor Weasley.
  5. Alphard, who 'gave gold to his runaway nephew'
  6. Sirius, who 'ran away'
  7. Andromeda, who 'married muggle Ted Tonks'

The fan report, with a full listing of the other members of the Black family, is now available at HP Lexiconopens in new window. For additional information regarding tomorrow's auction of this JK Rowling sketch, please visit Bloomsbury Auctions.

One of the more interesting articles that I have read. I love finding detailed histories especially of family lines. It means that the author put time and effort into developing these characters.

Family trees are so interesting to me, but this one with all the repeating names and marrying in the family, well, it goes beyond interesting into fascinating!! It explains a lot about Sirius' mother's attitude and all the muck about pure blood issues. I mean, after reading about this and now looking at it, I think I would rather not be pure blood if my family tree looked like that!!! Of course look at the name I pick for myself, after all, Tonks, and this is her family tree, even though she's invisible!!

This is very cool... The family tree isn't that weird until you get to Sirius' parents... (his grandparents were cousins in case you didn't catch that!!! :) I could never marry anyone who shares the same great grandparents I do. (their grandfathers were brothers, their fathers cousins!) I guess at least Sirius and his brother were a third generation of imbreeding so it's not as bad as it could have been!!! :)
Toujours Pur... interesting saying and definitely representative of how they feel...

I knew that the Weasleys were somehow tied into all of this. Afterall they are a pure blood family. There are not that many full pure blood families left around so there is bound to be some inter-mingling.

Great information. It's too bad the House of Black was so judgemental. Really, to disown someone for marrying into the Weasley family. They should have felt privileged.
