Gary Oldman returns for 'OotP', Sirius-ly Popular (20208)

After weeks of uncertainty and conflicting press reports, Gary Oldman is set to reprise his role as Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, his management company confirmed today.

Fan site GaryOldman.infoopens in new window posted the news earlier, and in a short interview Oldman's long-time manager Doug Urbanski confirmed it to HPANA, and elaborated on the prolonged ordeal.

"I'm so relieved and happy," said Urbanski. "I can't put my mind in the place of the producers, but I would've thought that when they read the book, a call to us would've been very high on their list. Obviously, the character of Sirius Black is key."

Urbanski said he was baffled by the months-long silence from Warner Bros. There were other jobs on offer to Oldman, and he was very close to taking one.

"Since they had no option for Gary on this film, he was a free agent. Last week, we told them that Gary had another movie, and it was just a question of doing a deal," he said.

Of the negotiations this morning with producer David Heyman, Urbanski said: "It was the most mature, simple and friendly negotiation that I've ever done."

"It's a wonderful role. Gary read the script last night, and he read part of it to me on the phone this morning. The end of the story is: Gary's in it. It's a terrific script, and he's so happy to be back."

Oldman also turned 48 today.

This is actually quite obvious to most of us but I think I'd like to clearly state it anyway. The Gary Oldman signing issue was very likely nothing more than movie 5 publicity. WB wanted to create interest in the movie quite early. (I think with every upcoming Potter they'll start even earlier) Goblet of Fire was a achievement in successful publicity more than anything else. The hype generated was amazing. I am happy to note that the hype while overblown wasn't off the mark. Goblet entertained as a blockbuster-value-for-money movie should, although like every Potter it had its own set of flaws. Enough has been said about that before. So, I'd like to say that I for one appreciate David Heyman's dedication to series more than anyone else's work on the films. But we know that Big Brother (in this case his name happens to be Warner) and not David runs the publicity machine. I'm sure David truly just wanted Gary to be signed on for good so that they could get on with the movie. But since its way too early to show promo pics from movie 5 (what would they do in the upcoming months then?) WB decided to create a little artificial suspense around everyone's beloved and movie 5's star Sirius Black's casting. Case in point...
Fans DONT EVER PANIC about your favorite HP actor not returning when you KNOW that he/she is crucial to the image of the franchise.

He is a cool actor, actually when I think about Sirius, his image comes right at me..

but I would have preferred Johnny Depp to make the character, Sirius is a charismatic character, and Oldman is not

It just WOULDNT be the same without Gary, he's brought something else to the character.
I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM DIE.
Well.. You know what I mean. It'll be interesting to see how much they cut out and this is the first of the 'Major' deaths as in.. Harrys protectors.. That we've seen die. I mean, we didnt SEE his parents die. And I can't wait to see the whole movie.. and Umbridge! Gahhhhh! Roll on 07'!

I'm really looking forward to movie 5. I know Sirius's death is really sad, but I know Oldman will do an awesome job with it and it will be awesome to see on screen.

Not surprising...it would be kind of hard to make OotP without Sirius...he's kind of a major character seeing as he dies at the end and it sets the mood for the 6th....
