The success of Harry Potter has made British publisher Bloomsbury the most cash-rich in its industry, writes The Guardian's Matt Seaton in an in-depth company analysis
.
With more than £50 million in its Gringott's vault, Bloomsbury is spending heavily to nab high-profile books from under the noses of competitors, in an effort to ensure that Potter's demise isn't also the end of their golden years:
The fact that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the latest and sixth in the series, is also the penultimate cannot have escaped the attention of Bloomsbury's shareholders. Newton talks about sustaining the franchise with "launches" of Harry Potter products (audiobooks, cloth-bound boxed sets, and so on) until 2011, but the truth is that after the final volume of JK Rowling's series appears, probably in 2007 and then in paperback in 2008, the company has just three more years of mega-bucks revenues.
Company executives are confident they can continue to deliver big returns to stockholders, post-Potter. Founding editor Liz Calder said "the heart and soul" of the publisher will continue to be driven by mass-interest novels, both fiction and non-fiction, but its new strategy will be: "big names, big money."
"We have made a number of big purchases in the last six months," said Nigel Newton, Bloomsbury's chairman. "We're in a position to do so."

Aren't they going to develope the Potter series, release new series-packs and so on? That could help...
But, even so, their best author is by far J.K. Rowling. When the Potter franchise is finished, everything is going to die down, isn't it? Along with Bloomsbury's income.

Why stop selling the books after 2011?
There are still a large amount of Potter fan that are too young to be able to read the books....
If they keep selling they could still bring in money (not as much as now but still)
Unless they decide to publish JK's non-Harry Potter books and become a huge sucsess, then they are in worries over where they are going to get money and public acclaim from...
I will feel upset when book 7 hits the shelves....
I will have nothing much to look forward to....
VERY UPSETTING

I don't think they meant that there would be no Potter after 2011. They might stop making money from it by then as very few people will be left who want to buy the books then. Most people here I'm sure will buy it in the first couple of days after it has been released. I can't wait for the next book. I'm sure it will be as good, if not better, than the other six!

It's hard to think about book 7 coming out because after everyone reads it, there will be nothing to speculate.
It will a sad and happy moment. I wonder if Harry Potter has made Scholastic here in the U.S. that rich? Probably. Harry Potter is the bestseller.

Well, thats to be expected. Good for them for thinking in the long term - the profits from Harry Potter wont last for ever! Now practically every household in Englaand has at least one of the 7 books, there wont be much market for them after everyone has bought book 7. And the title of this story - Potter publisher ponders post-profit plans - worthy of Harry Potter its self.

Of course they are. If they were not doing such things they would not be good business people. I'm sure they focus on many books even now.

Why would they stop selling Harry Potter after 2011...that's kinda dumb. Maybe they are gonna do what Disney is doing by putting movies in the "vault" and bring one book back one at a time for a limited time before they go back in the "vault". But I def. dont think they should stop selling harry potter. Harry Potter is a classic.

Harry Potter is thier biggest profit so it makes sense that they are going to continue to try and market different products even after the series is done.
