A report in an Italian newspaper states
that Warner Bros. has approached small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa) with the option of filming scenes for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. As with all reports on filming, please treat this as a rumor until confirmed.
A brief synposis of the article courtesy of Ilaria:
An Italian newspaper reports this morning that crew and production team members from Order of the Phoenix have been visiting a series of small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa), with a view to shooting part of the movie in Italy. I don't know how reliable this is, given they're not supposed to film outside the UK... Could it be a second-unit crew?
The mayor of Balestrino (one of the small towns) says people from WB have "surveyed" the locations, but are yet to get in touch with the local administration. But they said they loved the atmosphere: this part of Italy offers breathtaking landscapes, what with both the Tirreno sea and the Alps being close by. There's also a centuries-old sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, which would make striking background scenery...
The Mayor also says WB asked him to postpone any plans of renovation and repair to the ancient buildings - apparently, they don't want building sites and scaffoldings in the movie...
We will of course try to confirm this news with Warner Bros. Thanks to Ilaria at BadTaste
for the news, which you can read more of here
, and scan of the article.

I woudn't be surprised if it weren't a rumor. Some countries have better weather than others and may be more apropriated for certain sceneries. For an example, Lord of the Rings was shooted in New Zealand (even thought that they could have shoot it in Portugal -.- we have the exact same weather as they have).

What parts of the Order of the Phoenix could be filmed in Italy? I reckon it's just a rumour but if it's not I still know that the movie is going to be great. I can't wait!

I'll agree with some of you, if they film in Italy it might be the scene with Hagrid and the giants-although they could leave that part out of the movie as it was the most boring in the book, in my opinion. But maybe it will be more impressive on the big screen.
I also hope it is true for all Italian fans.

WOW! That's amazing! There are so many beautiful castles in Italy, it would make such a beautifull place to film! I wonder what WB will use it for in HP though.... I can't really picture it... and why have they suddenly decided to break the all-british restraints on the movies? ...Answers raise so many more questions...

I wonder if that's actually true. We'll have to wait and see! It seems as though it would be breaking from tradition to have filming in another country, but the books do talk about others at least. I look forward to reading more about OoP!

Personally, I don't care where they film it as long as it is getting done!!! :) I don't think it will be the same, but that isn't necessarily going to be a bad thing.

With something that has as much publicity as this, it is hard to say what is rumor and what is not. I guess all we can do is wait for it to be confirmed by an official... I am so excited for the new movie, all in all!!

Wow, I must admit, I am quite jealous! Not only does the cast of Harry Potter get to take part in such an amazing film series, but they also get to do it in Italy! I hope this is true, as I'm sure that Italy has some awesome scenery for the movies.

That's really cool! It would be really nice if they filmed in Italy, but they're not suppossed to film outside the UK? I understand them wanting to keep the senery looking like Britian, but Ital ywould be amazing! whatever, they'll do what they think is best...

I'm trying to think what sort of background in OotP for them to go so far afield. They already have Hogsmeade, and the Ministry of Magic is indoors.
What's outside and new that would require new locations in Italy?

It would be very peculiar if they were to film in Italy, since I don't think that they have filmed outside the UK as of yet. Correct me if I'm wrong. More pertinently, why would they NEED to film outside the UK? What's in the book which necessitates such a decision?
