A report in an Italian newspaper states
that Warner Bros. has approached small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa) with the option of filming scenes for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. As with all reports on filming, please treat this as a rumor until confirmed.
A brief synposis of the article courtesy of Ilaria:
An Italian newspaper reports this morning that crew and production team members from Order of the Phoenix have been visiting a series of small medieval towns in the Savona area (near Genoa), with a view to shooting part of the movie in Italy. I don't know how reliable this is, given they're not supposed to film outside the UK... Could it be a second-unit crew?
The mayor of Balestrino (one of the small towns) says people from WB have "surveyed" the locations, but are yet to get in touch with the local administration. But they said they loved the atmosphere: this part of Italy offers breathtaking landscapes, what with both the Tirreno sea and the Alps being close by. There's also a centuries-old sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, which would make striking background scenery...
The Mayor also says WB asked him to postpone any plans of renovation and repair to the ancient buildings - apparently, they don't want building sites and scaffoldings in the movie...

I hope they dont start filming in other countries. HP is in the UK, it would be wrong to shoot it in foreign locations with famous mountains of anotehr country/area of the world in the background...id get confuzzled *laughs* Theres plenty of medevial structures in Britain as it is, many beautiful places right here. A town near to me reminds me so much of diagon alley its unreal...York ;) would love for some shots to be from there hehe.

If they do end up filming there, i will be extremely jealous of the cast and crew. I always wanted to go see Italy! There's so much ancient history there that I find interesting (i.e. rome), plus the culture is just amazing

I don't believe this. Harry Potter is a British movie and the filming should stay in Britain. It would be cool to flim some scenes in Italy, but I doubt it. It would cost too much money. Plus, if they want midieval towns, Britian is the place. I am not taking this seriously, but we should see what happens.

There were rumours about filming moving to Europe earlier too. Maybe this is the same. WB decided then that filming would remain in the UK, as it should. Harry Potter is a British film after all. Brits would know if there is some foriegn scenery in the movie. And anyway, where in OotP does it say someone goes to Italy, or any other place with scenery like that?
