Shyamalan offered first 'Potter' movie Popular (5998)

During the press day for M. Night Shyamalan'sopens in new window latest movie Lady in the Wateropens in new window, the direct was askedopens in new window if his new studio Warner Bros., who release the Harry Potter movies, had tried to convince him to direct one of the last two films in the series.

Shyamalan's reply when asked about directing a Harry Potter movie:

You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.

I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]. The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with Unbreakable, which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books.

Shyamalan is widely known for his popular movies Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village, all of which he wrote and directed. Lady in the Water opens nationwide in the U.S. on July 21st.

AHHHH!!! Shyamalan for Book 7 movie!! I'm going to start a petition. He's the greatest modern director we have, or at least the most talented. Oh, and if we wrote the screenplay you know it would be fantabulous! I'm totally freaking out now. He'd be spectacular. Please, WB, offer it to him again! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!

kat_snowyowl, yes, he is great. He is the only modern filmmaker who writes, produces and directs his films. He is incredibly talented. The reason most people don't like him is that his movies don't rely on explicit sex and gore to carry them like most "horror" films do.

Interesting. I was under the impression that Shyamalan's forte was horror pictures, not really fantasy. I guess they both require vision and creativity.

Ooh, Shyamilan's films are really good!!! I think he'd definitely be able to capture the darkness of the films...

Harry Potter, a film by M. Knight Shyamalan. Wow, that certainly would've been different (and probably better, too). Can you believe both Shyamalan and Spielberg turned down HP1!?

If he directed the first movie, I'm sure it would've been much darker, which I don't find that bad. I can't wait to see 'Lady in the Water'!

Well he must be good if they've considered giving him a movie!!!!
I don't know how SS would have come out, with him as a director, but maybe the later, darker movies are better for his style........
Any way, he sounds great!!! Hope he gets his chance!!!!!

I simply can't see him doing a harry potter movie because his movie line is so darn freaky! and i just don't see harry potter being on that level of scary. love his movies, but not for harry potter.

He is a very good director. However his movies are ussually scary and the harry potter films are in no way scarry so i think that would have been a big disaster.

I wish the Harry Potter movies could get a really great director. A name, perhaps; not just some person who has directed a couple TV shows in the UK or who has had one indie flick hit the big time. I want a monster director. I think I would die if Peter Jackson actually directed HP. How cool would that be?

I really like his other movies, but for the first or second HP movies.. I don't think those would've been good for him. He's a bit too dark and the movies were actually more innocent back then. I think that he should have been offered for GoF, maybe he could have made the ending better. I expected it to be a lot scarier.

Wow...I can't see him directing any of the Harry Potter films. I wonder why they were considering him. He does scary movies/thrillers. Unless they think that he could add something more to the films that other directors couldn't.

Wow! I had never heard that. I don't know how I'd feel about that. I think he's a great director, but I don't know how well he'd have followed the books because he does have so many of his own ideas. That's very interesting to know that though.

Wow! I'm not sure I can even imagine what a Harry Potter movie would look like in the hands of M. Night Shyamalan! Somehow, I cannot see him directing the first movie - not dark or mysterious enough for him. I think he would have been good for the third one, but Cuaron did such a wonderful job on that one (other than cutting out a lot of important material) and I generally like what he did. MAybe Shyamalan will get another crack at it.

I mean, I liked some of the movies that he directed but not all.

I don't hold this against him. I think it would be cool if he did direct it, because he's brilliant. But I do believe there is a lot of nervousness over the movies because a precedence has been set.

Thank God! I liked Sixth Sense, and I really hated the Village, but I don't think he's the right kind of director. In every movie there's a freaky twist and it makes less sense.

WOW!!! I did NOT know that he got offered the first movie. I'm glad he didn't do it, because although I think he'd do a great job, HP needed a certain magic and feel to be created before it went dark and I don't see Shyamalan doing that.

I do think it would ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC if he directed HBP, or 7 whichever, he can do. I think he eould give the end of the series exactly the right kind of weight and importance that non-reading viewers don't understand. The whole HP would really benefit from a director like him, especially for what is coming in the series!!!

Its kind of bizarre to picture him directing a movie he didn't write though. I have a feeling it wouldn't as authentic. But you never know. WHAT IF THEY LET HIM WRITE IT?? I can just picture him reading through the books and then building up the last one with his own creativity.
