During the press day for M. Night Shyamalan's
latest movie Lady in the Water
, the direct was asked
if his new studio Warner Bros., who release the Harry Potter movies, had tried to convince him to direct one of the last two films in the series.
Shyamalan's reply when asked about directing a Harry Potter movie:
You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.
I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]. The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with Unbreakable, which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books.
Shyamalan is widely known for his popular movies Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village, all of which he wrote and directed. Lady in the Water opens nationwide in the U.S. on July 21st.

Shyamalan was offered the first movie and he didn't take it? Wow. It would've been a whole different movie, and the whole series would be different.... It would all probably have been a lot better....

I think his movies are a little weird in a way that suits him, but maybe doesn't suit Harry Potter. I'm kind of glad he turned it down!

Well I didn't become fully obsessed with HP until the third movie came out really. I've been reading HP since 1998, just haven't been obsessed until about 2 years ago, so I don't know a lot of the things like this about the earlier movies. That's interesting to know. Thanks for the update! Rock on HP!

Hm at first I didn't think his style would ever suit HP. But I think his use of twists could suit some of book 7's plotlines well.

Wow, if he would have taken over how crazy things would have been the first time around...obviously the dark kind of feeling we where supposed to get would have shown through early on. He wouldn't have handled the first films with a 20 foot pole like Columbus did in his happy-go-lucky adaptations.

I have always liked his movies, and I see that he cares about what movie he takes since he isn't sure if he should take this one.

I am NOT a Shyamalan fan, so I am glad he doesn't have the movie. I think he would have butchered it. Ugh, hopefully he never gets his hands directly (no pun intended) on HP!

it would be great if the last movies were directed by Shyamalan as it would be perfect for the darker harry potter books.

That would be good if he directed one of the last Harry Potter films because his style is dark, same as the HBP and Book 7(should be).

Shyamalan is propably in awe of harry potter films/books because of all the twists - which is a trait which Shyamalan also uses a lot.
Plus indian people rock.

I love M Night Shymalan's work and I love Harry Potter. But combining those two together is like combining chocolate ice cream cake with chicken soup. Both taste nice in their own ways, but combining them will be a disaster.

Oops. When I said Kloves in my original post, I meant Columbus. Silly me.
Anyway, Shyamalan's films are pretty intense. I think that the Harry Potter films could benefit from that. HBP definitely would.

I don't like the hand over the paper's line. He whould make a spooky, scary movie. I don't know if he whould take the fun and the comedy out of the movie.

Hm... he seems to like the Harry Potter series, but I don't see why he wouldn't go for the first one even if it did conflict with Unbreakable or whatever. I mean to say, Harry Potter beats all.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of my least favorite directors. I am really glad that he turned down Harry Potter.
Meh. I think that the movie would have been horrible with him as a director.

I hang my hat with the group that thinks he'd be better suited in one of the later films. He would have made the first one too dark and it was not.

Wow, I'd never heard that before that he'd been offered the first one. I don't know how I'd feel about it if he did one now, I mean I love his movies and I think he's great, but he sounds like he needs a lot of creative freedom and JKR wouldn't go for that.
