During the press day for M. Night Shyamalan's
latest movie Lady in the Water
, the direct was asked
if his new studio Warner Bros., who release the Harry Potter movies, had tried to convince him to direct one of the last two films in the series.
Shyamalan's reply when asked about directing a Harry Potter movie:
You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time. The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.
I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]. The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with Unbreakable, which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books.
Shyamalan is widely known for his popular movies Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village, all of which he wrote and directed. Lady in the Water opens nationwide in the U.S. on July 21st.

I saw this first on another site and it got me thinking. Just how different would the first movie have been if he directed it? Thats food for thought. Would the seris be popular as it is? Would it have been a flop? A huge success? I guess we will never know haha Its cool to think about that stuff though.

I'm not a fan his movies to date. I don't really think he would be able to do justice to a Potter movie based on his work that I have seen. He's really only directed screenplays that he's written himself and I think that he may have a hard time adapting a Potter book into a movie worth viewing.

I think Shyamalan would do an excellent job with movie six, since the last part of the book was pretty scary, he could make it even creepier. I've seen all of his movies and think they are all terrific. So yes, I think he'd be an excellent director choice.

Interesting choice. I really love his movie although you totally guessed the ending of the village about 1/2 hour in. I'd have to see what he thinks about character development and how he would treat Ron's character for me to approve.

WoW!!! If Shyamalan directs the last films they are going to be so different! But I think that's good because the books are getting darker and he would make the dark parts of them better!
The Harry Potter movies would have started so much different if he had been the director from the beggining... maybe that would be better... I don't know...

Ick, no way! I really don't like him in general anyway, I don't get why a lot of people think he's such a great director. Some of his movies are okay but none of them really falls in line with what Harry Potter is meant to be. Frankly I'm surprised he was even offered the opportunity, especially since he's never adapted a book before. Oh well I don't see it happening.

That would be really cool if he directed the movie because then there would be that tense atmosphere in the movie which would make it a blockbuster.

I don't know about Shyamalan directing HP. He is a brilliant director but not of kids films, his genre is definitely adult oriented. Granted HP is growing up and each book becomes progressively darker but with Shyamalan directing I believe it would be a little too intense.

Wow! I did not know he was offered to film the first movie. He probably would have done a great job if did film the movie. But on the other hand Harry Potter would have been different. I'm glad (not to be mean) that he didn't film the movie. Because Chris Columbus did an excellent job on the first two films!!!!

O M G! M Night Shyamalan is an awesome director, but he just can't do Harry Potter. He's one of those director who does those crazy dramatic movies..hard to explain, but he CAN'T do Harry Potter. Chris Columbus, HE CAN do Harry Potter. NOT Shyamalan, and don't get me wrong, I love "Signs" and all of M Night Shyamalan's movies, but he's just not Harry Potter material!

Er...I don't know. I definitely have my reservations about him directing a HP film. What's wrong with Newell? I think they should just stick with one of the directors they've already used...

Gosh, that is so strange! Mr Shya-how-do-you-spell-it is such a different director from Columbus... far less conventional & all-american (If I remember well at least...)
Imagine what the series would hvae looked like if he'd done the first... How weird!!

Hmm, I'm not sure if he would do well directing a Harry Potter film. I'm sure if he did they would have had a really different feeling to them, and I can't be sure if they would have had a good feeling or a bad feeling about them; it's strange even thinking about it.

Man, the first movie could have been much better if Shyamalan had directed it. I think he'd do the sort of dark atmosphere in the last two books justice, rather than adding too much humor like other directors did.

I cannot imagine a Harry Potter movie directed by him. His idea of Voldemort would problably be some crazy man who runs around a Village scaring people every once in awhile.

AHHHH!!! Shyamalan for Book 7 movie!! I'm going to start a petition. He's the greatest modern director we have, or at least the most talented. Oh, and if we wrote the screenplay you know it would be fantabulous! I'm totally freaking out now. He'd be spectacular. Please, WB, offer it to him again! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!
