Earlier in the week we let you know
that director M. Night Shyamalan
had been offered the first Harry Potter movie, which he declined due to other film commitments. In a recent interview, when asked about 'Potter' he adds
that he would be the "greatest protector" of JK's work, would choose the last movie if given a choice of which of the movies to direct and that passing on the first movie still "haunts him."
Shyamalan was interviewed by TLC and you can read a snippet from the interview below:
I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful....There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it.
You will be able to listen
to the full interview when it is released on Sunday.

I LOVE M. Night Shyamalan! I've always wanted him to direct the Harry Potter movies! I hope they offer it again, I think he would make the best HP movie of them all!

Ookay... I still don't like his movies. Though it is encouraging to see that he obviously would care about the film.

That's too bad he turned down the first movie. I think he would have made the entire HP series amazing(. . . well, even more so than it already is). I have complete faith in his ability to stay true to a story and I can't wait for the 7th film now.

I'm still undecided on having him direct the last HP film. Many on the forum have said that if he did then the film would be really scary. In my opinion, only the trailers for his films look scary. Like with the Village. The trailers made it look like a horror film and then everything was fake and the final film wasn't really scary at all. I just hope that Shayamalan wouldn't make the last HP film all hype and no substance.

Some of his work is rather questionable... but, I think if given the 7th or 6th Harry Potter movie, he will exalt it in the highest. I think it fits his style.... I dont want anything too fluffy.

Hmmm...well, I'm glad he would be devoted...I'm still not sure he's the right choice for a Potter movie at this point. I think that if he had taken the offer of doing the first one it would have been very good but the series has taken a definite turn away from the style of movies he directs, and to bring him in now would drastically change the flow of the series.

Agreed sapphire. I have a feeling that he may just get the nod to direct the final HP film and if that happens then I will wish him the best but also have high expectations.

I would absolutely love if Shyamalan would direct movies 6 and 7. I think he could capture the darkness of the books and just the overall feel of them, unlike previous directors. He'd probably bring something out in the actors too. And I do think he would protect and cherish JKR's work. Offer him the job, dammit!

If Shyamalan says he wont mess with with the books, he won't. And that will be nice considering what has happened to Quidditch

That's really good to hear. It would be pretty unsettling if any future HP director approached the film lightly. I think it's really good that there is a new director for each of the HP films (with the exception of Chris Columbus), because each one brings a unique perspective to the series. I thought Mike Newell did a particularly excellent job with GoF.

Godric11 says:
I think people need to realize that he has the potential to make the movie without making it a horror-film. He's a very loyal person when it comes to written things...I read an article in 'Entertainment Weekly' about how when his long time collegues suggested he re-work his recent project (Lady in the Water) he told them that he wouldn't change what he put so much effort into just to appeal to the masses. He's very much and artistic director as well as a writer...he would really apreciate the story, no doubt.
I do think he has a bit of an ego as he does plaster his name all over things and he does remain very secretive with his work...which could pose a problem for us fans.
The people complaining about him turning HP into a scary film I think need to actually think about what they are reading...if I remember correctly, didn't dead corpses come back to life and attack Harry in the last book?
What we are reading is already pretty crazy in itself.
