Earlier in the week we let you know
that director M. Night Shyamalan
had been offered the first Harry Potter movie, which he declined due to other film commitments. In a recent interview, when asked about 'Potter' he adds
that he would be the "greatest protector" of JK's work, would choose the last movie if given a choice of which of the movies to direct and that passing on the first movie still "haunts him."
Shyamalan was interviewed by TLC and you can read a snippet from the interview below:
I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful....There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it.
You will be able to listen
to the full interview when it is released on Sunday.

Im not sure I would like Shyamalan as the director for the last book. I dont really like his work too much mainly because of the techniques he uses. He is very dark and there is almost no colour in his films. I also dont like how he makes it so that you finally understand the movie only in like the last 15 mins, and then have to go back to watch it again to fully understand and appreciate the film (see sixth sense). I would be absolutely HORRIFIED if the director from POA came back. I may even consider not seeing the film! There were so many problems with POA, I would be very anxious if he came back (the firebolt and pantronous oversight are just the beginnings of the problems in that film) The only thing that had me watching GOF was that it had to be better than POA (it was, but it still could have been better)
I think the director that did X-men one and 2 as well as Superman would be a good choice for the directors of the 6 or 7th film. Either that or some new, not very famous british director.

I completely agree with HEDWIG101 Bryan singer would be amazing to do Harry potter. LOok at x-men 1 and 2 & now superman returns. One thing is sure If he does Harry potter he will stick true to the story and music will be amazing throughout the movie.

Wow, im impressed. Maybe if he is the new director he'll force Gambon to read the books or not play Dumbledore! I really like him as a director so i sincerely hope he directs one of them.

I always loved his vison and to have him direct the last movie would be a dream come true. Plus his american and there's nothing better to see someone bring out our same ideas and styles out on film. But he defintly needs to watch his coat tails and "protect" and "cherish" JK's work.

That would be wicked awesome if he would direct HP7!! He's an excellent director and he says he would protect JKR's book and cherish the chance to create the last film. He seems enthusiastic and that's great because it shows he would put his heart and dedication into it. As long as he keeps his word he's got my vote!

As much as I've enjoyed the movies, they haven't always been as true to the books as I would like...sounds like Shyamalan would try to do a better job with that.

I am glad to hear he would protect JKR's work. There are a load of directors snipping to be the one chosen for the final movie, and the last book isn't even out yet. I just wonder after hearing his 'change of heart' over the last few days whether he is honestly doing it for the passion of Harry Potter or for the glory and money.

Wow. That are some pretty strong and thoughtful words to Jk's works. He soungds like a real nice guy. I do actually wonder if he is going to direct the last HP movie. Plus I wonder if the movie is going to be any good if he is directing it. Not that i think he is abad director, just a thought. I can' wait to hear the interview on sunday. Hope its really good, yet I think it will be.

Please, please like him direct it. I would love to see him direct one of the Pottters. I think he would do a great job, and not screw up all the plot points like some of the other directors.

It's great that a director would protect the written word of an author and not try to make the movie their own.
Way to go, Shyamalan!

Now after reading this, I guess it would be cool if he directed one of the last movies. He sounds like he wouldn't change the story too much, so I guess he wouldn't put aliens in it, or dead people.
He sounds like he would be very dedicated to the Harry Potter movies, he would probably make it a whole lot better than we've seen. I say let him direct it!!

That is thoughtful, but I'm still not sure that he would be the best director to direct HP. Each director has their certain style... And some of it is still -- no matter what -- incorporated into the movie.
