Earlier in the week we let you know
that director M. Night Shyamalan
had been offered the first Harry Potter movie, which he declined due to other film commitments. In a recent interview, when asked about 'Potter' he adds
that he would be the "greatest protector" of JK's work, would choose the last movie if given a choice of which of the movies to direct and that passing on the first movie still "haunts him."
Shyamalan was interviewed by TLC and you can read a snippet from the interview below:
I would be the greatest protector of an author's stuff. Especially things that I respect, that I know there's inherently magic in it. I would be very wary of screwing it up, so I would be very careful....There's no way that it would be missed by lack of effort or lack of care or lack of attention. I would be giving it every single iota...I would cherish it.
You will be able to listen
to the full interview when it is released on Sunday.

He sounds awesome then. It'd be really cool for him to direct HP7..... It'd be pretty darn scary though!

Thats very interesting. It really must be frusterating to regret declining the first movie. It almost sounds as if he is campaigning for the seventh movie by offering to protect and "cherish it".

It sounds like he can make a good HP movie. At least he will give movie a full attention... or he says so. But I like that he is really pritective of the books.

I genuinely hope that he is given the last two movies to film. I don't think that we potter fans would have as many complaints as the movies would be more faithful to the books. Please Warner Bros. listen to us?! ^..^

That is so cool that Shayamalan would try to make a HP movie as close to the book as he could get it. I don't think any director has ever said what he said. I hope he'll be able to direct one of the HP movies.

Does this mean that he will direct the last movie? I hope so, I've seen a few of his movies and they were really great!

I would love to see him direct the last film!! It would really change how the movies are, it would make them a bit more scary and dark, not that they need it but I'm sure the last movie will have to be dark, with everyone dying and the last battle etc.!!!:D

"...if given a choice I would choose to direct the last movie..." well, as they are curently making the fifth movie, there are only two movies left, there is not much left to choose from.
Without knowing anything about the last book, if I was a director, I would also choose the last one, as audiences will tend to remember the last one, rather than the middle the second to last when movies are part of a continued series.
I am not trying to slam Shymalan, I have not seen any of his movies other than "Sixth Sense," the rest have just not appealed to me. The only thing I can say against him is that I dislike that most of his movies come out with his name almost as part of the name of the movie.

Shyamalan makes the worst movies ever. I really hope that he doesn't get a chance to ruin one of the greatest series of movies ever.

Yes, yes, yes! Please, please, please WB! He would be so awesome! Have you seen Signs? It's brilliant, makes such an impact and thats wat these next movies should do. He's really good at directing actors and bringing the characters out of them, and great with relationships between the characters. Getting Shyamalan to direct would add so much class to the HP movies.
Plus he promises to be loyal to the books...just hire him already WB!

Interesting stuff, i'll have to listen to the full interview when it comes out. I wonder what the first film would have been like if he had directed it... Probably better the Columbus farce.

I am not sure that he would be the best. It would really depend on how the last book turns out. He could be the worst choice. I am still hoping that Curon from POA will come back for the last or book 6.

HarryPotter7 says:
Yeah he sounds cool to be directing the last HP movies, but Shyamalan is a director that direct a whole lot of twists in his movies, like Sixth Sense, and maybe it not be right unless the last book has twists or it can be translate the book into twists. Well if he does direct i hope he will find a way to make a great twist in the HP movies and reads the book at least and follow the book just like the First director of the Sorcerors Stone

I have never heard of him, but I am kind of getting tired of all these new people coming on board... (although I am glad to hear that he wants to maintin the story...)
I was happy with the change for PoA, but a little disappointed in GoF... I hope OotP is a better depiction of the book...

Muse of the Aurors says:
Well that's really good that he would "protect" it and "cherish" it and is "wary of screwing it up," so maybe he should be offered another chance to try and make the HP movies. There's only 2 movies left and he wants to do the last movie, so if he bombs it....he'll leave the worst last impression ever.
Personally, I think he should do movie 5 and if he aces it, then let him do movie 6.

I suppose he would be ok, I don't really know about him or his work to be honest, buy how dare he turn down the first movie. Should he be given a second chance? I'm sure whoever is chosen will do a great job though, how couldnt they...it's Harry Potter.

Sounds like he is willing to give it a go, but I'm still not sure his style of films is appropriate for a Harry Potter film. Who knows though he may do really well if he directs one.
