Is it possible for Harry Potter fans to see an opera version of the series in the near future? Well if Tiffany Moon has her way The Harry Potter Opera Cycle may become a reality
.
Moon, who is a composer, has completed one Potter opera solo of a seven-part opera cycle based on the books. So far she has been denied permission from Rowling as well as Warner Bros. to conduct the opera, but is holding out hope that permission may be eventually given.
Moon on the possibility of the opera becoming a reality:
I can't imagine that this could remain her position forever. That the author of a series of books that created such a powerful new interest in reading by young people across the globe would forever deny the use of her subject matter for a series of operas that could direct this same interest to another very valuable art form.
Moon’s reasoning as to why a Harry Potter opera may appeal to all fans:
What isn't it about them that makes them operatic? It's pure epic. There's the hero who doesn't know who he is, who has to grow into himself. Whose master has to die before he can take on the mantle.
(It has) fabulous love stories, conflicts. There's a very pure good/evil conflict, but more human evils show up as well. Things that make the stories a little more interesting and real.
UPDATE: HPFZ recently interviewed
Ms. Moon in which she further explained her vision of a Harry Potter opera:
HPFZ: The Harry Potter series is packed with emotion, humor and bravery. Will you be focusing on one of these aspects more than the other two?
Ms. Moon: Because an opera is simply a book set to music, which conveys every part of the book, from the plot development, to the action within each scene, to the ver insides of the characters themselves, I would not be composing for the HP books correctly if I weren't writing music that encompassed all parts of the books. I'm not creating an interpretation; I'm composing precisely for each book, very nearly in its entirety.
You can read the full interview here
. Thanks Matt.

That's quite interesting. From the comments I've read, it's aroused some odious feelings. All-the-same, though I think (and, personally, hope) it won't succeed, there is some potential to it.

Wow! That would be so... interesting! I have always wanted to become more cultured and see an opera, so maybe this could be my first (as long as permission is given). Still, I can see why Rowling dismissed the idea.

JKR is wise not to permit this. Here in Canada they made a musical out of The Lord of The Rings that played in Toronto and it was a bit of a disaster. I'd hate to see that happen to Harry Potter.

Silly Dragon says:
I am not certain that the harry Potter series lends itself to opera. As the composer explains, the story holds many elements that could feature in an opera, especially the epic dimension. However I doubt it would be interesting to turn it into a play. The places and characters are numerous, and it is impossible to render so great diversity on a stage. As far as singing is concerned, I don't see what sort of text the libretto could feature. I think it would be much damage done to J.K.R's work, sinceit would necessarally be shortened, simplified or in anyway re-arranged. The singing would result rather awkward, somewhat ridiculous. I am not usually very happy with the style of singing in opera anyway. Besides, John William's music appears to me as a reference.
Most operas are based on plays, more rarely on novels. i'd be curious however to hear the opera that Moon has scored, to get an idea of how it's made up. As SmartLikeHermione says, Harry Potter is not quite similar to Wagner's operas. Just imagine, Potter in Bayreuth... The artwork woud be uite uncomplete.

wow, an opera! Its amazing to realize how far HP has gotten, and how much it has affected the world... but an opera?!? Not being an opera fan myself, I wouldn't enjoy it. pardon my saying this, but opera usually only attracts a certain age group; I doubt there are 10 year old harry potter lovers who would like an opera. But hey, I can't say it wouldn't be interesting:P

This will only be appealing to fans after movie 7. If she creates an opera version in its memory so that the true Harry Potter spirit will NEVER die out.

That is kinda neat. Although, I am not much of an Opera fan, so I am not quite sure If I would be able or willing to go see it. But, for all of those that do, I hope it is a great experience if it does become a reality.

I'm glad that Jo isn't allowing the Harry series to become an opera. It just wouldnt seem right, the whole story inside of an opera. I dont think that this lady sees what Harry Potter is really about. She needs to see the magic, and then she would realize the fact that the books are enough, we didnt even need the movies to grasp it. An opera is not needed to see what is there.

I don't think that I will go to any opera oriented HP shows. That is just going a bit too much into the whole artistic form thing. Its true that there's this whole good vs. evil thing going on and it might make a good show but I dobt it. It might do the opposit and just ruin the whole book.

Sorry for doube-posting but I just wanted to add that I think that Tiffany Moon just wants to make money and be know worldwide as 'the first person to create Harry Potter opera'. But hey, since opera is her job, she might enjoy doing it, so who are we to judge, right?
I still think it's crazy, though...

I really don't want there to be a Harry Potter opera. =/ I know that sounds so pessimistic of me, and I'm not even really sure why I don't want there to be an opera, but I just don't. I guess it just seems like kinda too much *shrugs*...and plus, they'd probably screw up the story sooo bad...
