Is it possible for Harry Potter fans to see an opera version of the series in the near future? Well if Tiffany Moon has her way The Harry Potter Opera Cycle may become a reality
.
Moon, who is a composer, has completed one Potter opera solo of a seven-part opera cycle based on the books. So far she has been denied permission from Rowling as well as Warner Bros. to conduct the opera, but is holding out hope that permission may be eventually given.
Moon on the possibility of the opera becoming a reality:
I can't imagine that this could remain her position forever. That the author of a series of books that created such a powerful new interest in reading by young people across the globe would forever deny the use of her subject matter for a series of operas that could direct this same interest to another very valuable art form.
Moon’s reasoning as to why a Harry Potter opera may appeal to all fans:
What isn't it about them that makes them operatic? It's pure epic. There's the hero who doesn't know who he is, who has to grow into himself. Whose master has to die before he can take on the mantle.
(It has) fabulous love stories, conflicts. There's a very pure good/evil conflict, but more human evils show up as well. Things that make the stories a little more interesting and real.
UPDATE: HPFZ recently interviewed
Ms. Moon in which she further explained her vision of a Harry Potter opera:
HPFZ: The Harry Potter series is packed with emotion, humor and bravery. Will you be focusing on one of these aspects more than the other two?
Ms. Moon: Because an opera is simply a book set to music, which conveys every part of the book, from the plot development, to the action within each scene, to the ver insides of the characters themselves, I would not be composing for the HP books correctly if I weren't writing music that encompassed all parts of the books. I'm not creating an interpretation; I'm composing precisely for each book, very nearly in its entirety.
You can read the full interview here
. Thanks Matt.

I really hope that she doesnt get her way. I really just cannot imagine a Harry Potter opera. I think that is just pushing it a little to far. The movies are already bad enough.

I would definately go and see it if it became an opera, i think it would be enjoyable. Plus it would "bring opera back" because at the moment no one watches opera but im sure lots of people would go and see this.
Im not surpised they have denied permisson at the moment, but who knows one day maybe it will be made into an opera. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Now maybe what Jo has done for reading, she can do for opera. I think that would be a bloody brilliant thing to see and I for one would go to see it as well as taking as many others as I could get.

Oh, that would be so cool! I love musicals/operas! That would make it all so much better!
But personally, I think we're all a little Potter-crazed right now. I can see why she hasn't got permission...maybe in several years. Compare when Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables the novels were written compared to when the musicals were written, for example. Wicked was a lucky and wonderful exception, though.
Maybe we'll see this in several years...perhaps we'll all be dead by then...

Haha! Harry Potter goes opera!!
That's a good one. But why not? I don't care ... Even if Moon has her ways to convince our stubborn JK Rowling and has the chance to make "Harry Potter" as an opera - I'm not sure if it makes its way to Germany (where I come from - you might have guessed it ;P ) ... so ... like so many things of Potter happening in the UK or the USA ... I won't even notice it. But perhaps ... I mean "Phantom of the Opera" made its way trhough the world. And I dare say that our so beloved Harry is even more popular than the Phantom. So ... Fortuna knows.
So long,
Y:h.

I don't know about an opera. I'm not to big on opera's. I do like the idea of the love stories and conflicts, which I guess is HP's life.

I think she should wait untill the seventh book to start pursuing J.K. Rowling about the rights to make an opera.

NO! It would not be the right thing. HP is a too complexed story to turn it into an opera. There are many complexed details in the books - they can be unterstood in the film, but not when someone is sining it. The traditional operas are based on simple stories, what can be understood, when somone is singing it - HP is NOT AT ALL A SIMPLE STORY!
Also HP has a lot of moments, where special effects are needed. On theatre stage it would look just weird. After seeing the amazing special effects in the movies the theatre version would be just extremely funny!
HP books and films have been to me and also to thousands of fans a wonderful experience. It should not be ruined by some silly opera.
DON'T MAKE AN OPERA OUT OF amazing HP!

Interesting idea. Not sure it would really work. I can see why permission is being denied until all the movies are done. Then maybe, but only with strict control.

I dont really know how i feel about that. It just kinda seems overblown and a ploy to gain reflected glory from JK. I prolly wouldnt see it.

Haha an opera...I dunno. I would think JK wouldn't be too happy with the idea. Most kids and adolescents aren't big fans of opera. I couldn't sit even a couple hours and listen to any opera..even if it was about HP.

I think that lady's a little nuts. I mean, I'm all for musical theater, but I don't know if HP would really make a good opera. Just look at what they did to some of the movies. Wouldn't an opera be even worse? And anyway, can you really imagine any of the characters singing? ('cept maybe Dobby)

If it does happen... I'll probably go and see how it is, if I like it I'll attend the other ones.

Totally agreed. It seems cool at first, but then when you think about it, honestly? Can you picture Voldemort singing "I will kill you, Harry!" or Snape singing, "AVADA Kedavraaaaa!" Jeez!

I'm torn about this. I don't know if I can really visualize Harry Potter as an opera, but I guess if it was done really well, it could turn out to be great. I think it's either a really bad or a really good idea.

I'm laughing because everyone sounds like they're being tortured by the shear thought of an opera. Well I'm not too fond of the Opera idea myself. A musical maybe, but when books get turned into plays/musicals and such they are changed. It would not be the same Harry Potter from the Books or the Movies. It's an interesting notion and I won't lie...I'd go see it, but sometihng tells me that it won't be the same.
Come on guys, the turned Wicked (Gregory Maguier) into a musical and The Phantom of the Opera (Gaston Lerux) was a book first. Neither of them are the same as their original book, but they're still good stories.

That sounds very very strange. I never really thought of HP as an opera... it would just be so weird. How would they show some of the parts like the tasks in the fourth book and stuff (if they were even allowed to do it up to the fourth)? It may be interesting to see just to find out how they're going to pull it off.
