A few weeks ago Harry Potter author JK Rowling appeared on the Richard & Judy show and announced to the world that two more characters have died than she originally planned in the last book. Fans have been grappling with who is going to die for weeks, and now James Krasner, professor of English and British Victorian literature at the University of New Hampshire insists
that Harry will not be killed off in the last book.
According to Prof. Krasner:
There's no way Harry will die. Harry won't die largely because these are comic stories, like Dickens' novels, in which good has to win.
Whenever an author's books become very popular in his or her lifetime, as is the case with Rowling, a tug of war starts between the author and the fans about who the characters really belong to. Rowling, like Conan Doyle (creator of Sherlock Holmes), is trying to assert her control. She’s reminding us that Harry is her character, not ours; she can kill him if she wants to. Doyle actually did kill off Sherlock Holmes, but Rowling won’t go that far because she cares about Harry. Conan Doyle was really sick of Holmes.
Krasner also points out:
Rowling caused a media sensation when she said a "major character" would die in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Rumors targeted Harry’s best friend, Ron Weasley, but in the end, it was it was Sirius Black, who Krasner says "was an important supporting character, but not really a major character like Ron."
Krasner's thoughts on who will die in the last book:
Lord Voldemort has to die. And Snape, who is really fighting for good despite all appearances, will likely die. Neville Longbottom is really the chosen one, so I suspect he'll die.
UPDATE: So far, most of you agree with him. In our ongoing death poll (now with over 20,000 responses), 60% say Harry will survive the series.

hufflepuff_babe: I totally agree with you, as I really don't want Remus to die either!
I wouldn't mind going to Mexico. I learnt Spainish for 5 years, I have forgotten most of that now.
Where are you from, out of intrest?

Yeah I really loved Mexico and met a lot of people. I am sure I will go back sometime.
I have been in Spanish class for four years now but it's a High School class. I am planning on taking it in college though. If you don't use it you'll probally forget it!\
I am from Wisconsin, USA.

hufflepuff_babe: Yeah I defintly hear you there! I really did wish that when I was studying Spainish, that my parents would go to Spain for a holiday, and I could translate for them! I think that would have been very cool!
That's great! Is that one of the "Mid West" States? Or is in "Tornado Ally"? I'm not that great with the geography of the US.

Yes Wisconsin is in the midwest. Don't worry about not knowing the geography of the US. Not a lot of people that I know know how many providences are in Canada or how many states are in Mexico.
Essex is pretty close to London than? My friend also went to South Hampton.
I really like Spanish and I also like English. I think I might want to teach English to people who speak Spanish or otherwise I will do something in the buisness field.

hufflepuff_babe : Thats good! I didn't want to seem that I should have known something, when I didn't. If that makes any sense!
Also you are right there, Essex is very near to London. I live in the part of Essex, that is right up close to London, so much so, that I don't cound myself from comming from Essex. Girls from Essex have a really bad name. Like a sterotype. Aparantly, I am ment to peroxid blond, (which I am most defintly not!) wear mini white leather skirts (which i defintly don't!) and I'm ment to be easy! (Defintly not as well!!!!)
Did she? What did she study. Also, it is one word. Not that it bothers me, I thought that I would point it out to you.
That sounds really intresting! That way you could cumminicate to your students in either language! What sort of biusness would you open up?

Hehe yeah wasn't sure if it was one word or not. Anyway, my friend went for a soccer camp thing. We're not in college yet although when I am I want to study abroad.
I think I would go into advertising or graphic design but I'm not so sure yet. I should decide soon but I still have some time to think about it.
What do you do for a job?

I have no idea my hours, or which age group I'm working with! That is totally crazy!
Going into avatising or griffics sounds really intresting. Are you a good drawer?

Ah yes I did indeed read that you were a nurse in your profile. Congrats on the new job! I hope that you'll like it.
I'm pretty good at drawing and love to paint. I think that would be a lot of fun but I would probally end up working freelance. (he he another word that sounds like 2) I don't know if I would like that.

My sister is a really good drawer. we have her paintings up in our house.

Ah I see. I love kids but if I was to be a teacher I would like to teach an older grade. That way I wouldn't have to teach all of the subjects just English, the one I love the most.
My mom put my paintings, drawings, and sculptures around our house. I love exchanging artwork with my friends, it's a good way to decorate and the piece has meaning.

Oh right I forgot. My avatar is of Nymphadora Tonks, how I imagine her to be. It's a little blurry yet though. I have to fix that still.
I changed it because I told myself I would finish this avatar by the end of the summer. I got tierd of the other one also. I have to change who I ship every once in a while. Lupin/Tonks rock.

My parents put a lot of my sister work around the house as well. She is really good and really tallented.
That is a cool avatar. I also agree with you there about changeing Avarats every once and a while. I would like to change mine, but I can't find one that I like as much as I do this one.

I have too many avatars that I can never decide what to use. Anyway I changed it again because the other one is a little fuzzy.

Yeah I love mionie. It's actually from the 2nd movie though. The girl's bathroom sink is in the background.
My favorite Harry Potter book is Prisoner of Azkaban but it is followed by Order. I really liked PoA because Sirius is in it and it is so enchanting. I loved Order though because of, well, the Order of the Phoenix. I would love to hear more about the Order in the final book.

I agree with you also about hearing more form the Order. I would love to hear more from them!

My book order would have to be:
1) Prisoner of Azkaban
2) Order of the Phoenix
3) Goblet of Fire
4) Half Blood Prince
5) Chamber of Secrets
6) Philosopher's Stone
For movies it's different:
1) Goblet of Fire
2) Chamber of Secrets
3) Sorcer's Stone
4) Prisoner of Azkaban
My favorite chapter is Felix Felcies from Half-Blood Prince.

hufflepuff_babe: My favorite movies are very difficult, because I didn't really like the way they did them as much. But here are my votes in the Order.
1) Chamber of Secrets (it was closer to the book)
2) Philosopher's Stone( Closeish to the book)
3) Prisoner of Azkaban ( It only told half the story, and I was really looking forward to the Quidditch matches.)
4) Goblet of Fire, (for its special effects only)

Yes I agree. I thought Chamber and Philosopher's Stone were very well done. When Alfonso Curton directed Prisoner I thought that it was terrible. I was mad when I came out of the theatre. They left out the maurauders and Quiddich! Since this is the shortest movie of the four I think they should have made it a bit longer and at least explained who the maurauders were.
I really enjoyed Goblet though because even though some things were left out (Winky, Quiddich world cup match) I thought that there was reason to leave it out. I liked it better than Prisoner because it actually had the feel of a Potter movie.

hufflepuff_babe: I guess so. However, I did enjoy Alonzo's virson. I also agree with you that I was mad when I came out of the cinema as well!
What also really annoued me in Goblit, was that they didn't use the charater Ludo Bagman! They put his charater into Barty Crouch, which I thought was totally ridiculas! I was so angy when I came out of the cinema! *laughs* In fact the only reason why I bought the 4th movie was fro 2 reasons. The fisrts was to see if I was over reacting with howmuch I didn't like the movie (I wasn't) and the other main reason why was because I wanted to see the deleted sceens. I really wished that there was a commentry to it, so That I could find out the reason why those sceens weren't used, because I think out of all of the ones they'd shown, I think there was one Sceen that they didn't need to add to the movie, and the rest they did.
*Calms down* Sorry, I really start ranting when I get onto this subject. *Laughs*

Yeah I agree. I was angry about the fourth as well as Prisoner. I really did not like how they had left out a huge chunk of the plot and never even introduced Winky the house elf or anything.
The third one just made me more mad because it seemed like it would take 2 seconds to explain who the maurauders really were. I thought that was important to the plot and I enjoyed the book so much because of it.
Anyway I bought them all regardless of how much I liked or disliked them. I still watch them anyway but just kind of think what could have been at some parts where information of plot details is left out.

hufflepuff_babe: Yeah, I do still watch them. When I do, I really try not to say anything, because there is no point, as I can't change what the Drictors and the Writers helped to make the movie. (If that makes any sense.)
I especally agree with you about the Maraders, as that is one of the most important parts of the whole Harry Potter series. I remember waiting in the cinema for the movie to explaing to the audience what was going on.
I really hope that in the next one, they are more ture to the actual plot of the book, as this Order of the Phoenix is my favorite book!

Yes that does make sense. I know I can't change anything so why bother complaining? I'm just happy there are Potter movies.
I had to explain to my dad who the Maurauders were because he went and saw the movie and he's never read the books. (I know it's a shame!) I was just annoyed but now it's like whatever, I just hope the next movies will be better than that one!
Anyway, what is your view on Harry Potter dying or not dying?

Eleanor says:
hufflepuff_babe: Yeah I agree with you there! Although I wish they would make them more accrute to the book, so that every one can understand them, and that don't leave importants parts out.
On Harry dying, I hope that he doesn't, ans I would love for him to live out his life, to become an Auror and to finish hunting down the rest of the Death Eaters.
However my more pratical side says that Harry won't suvive the series because J K Rowling is not going to write any more Harry Potter books after the last one. So to do that, she would have to kill Harry off so that no other Aurthor could pick up where J K Rowling has left off.
Do you see my deliema?

Yes I certainly do see your diliema. I would love for Harry to survive as well and live happily ever after with his friends. My realistic side has been telling me that there's no way Harry would survive if this is the last book that JK Rowling is writing.
I am just hoping for a good ending and a good final storyline for the book. I really ask nothing more.
