Warner Bros. has confirmed to HPANA that it plans to pull all of the first four Harry Potter DVDs off store shelves by early 2007, with no announced plans for their return.
Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban will become unavailable after December 29, 2006. Goblet of Fire will follow suit on February 9, 2007.
First reported by Home Media Retailing Magazine
, the move may indicate WB's interest in stoking sales this non-Potter holiday season, or preparing for newer editions of the films on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray technology.
Called a "moratorium," the practice is commonplace in the home video industry. The most notable instigator is Disney, which often locks away movies in their "vault" to stimulate sales and publicity.
Thanks to Matthew for the tip.

I really would rather they didn't do that. Where would I find a replacement if one wears out? Ah, well.

This seems absolutely idiotic...if people are still buying 'em keep them on the shelves!
It's a good publicity stunt and that's it.

This does sound like a bit of a strange move to me. I'm sure there is some kind of marketing plan that requires the old DVD's to be out of the way. Expect them to release an "extended version" or something of the sort in a year or so...

Okay, so what are the people who don't have HD-DVD's supposed to do when release five comes along? Go back to playing Harry Potter shadow puppets on the wall? HD-DVD is so new, it's going to take a while to filter down to everyone.

Well I guess I will have to go out and buy them all again, just in case. I do hope they will release them again later on and make them better with more features. That sound pretty cool. Like Lord of the Rings extend all the Potter movies.

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad I already have my copies, though we would have plenty of time to stock up before their yanked out from under us. I guess it would stimulate sales, but I don't really like the idea. What if our grandchildren want to see the movies? What then?

Hmm............thats weird, why eould they do that? Ah well, Most people have all the dvds anyway. Would they be still be putting them out on box-sets though?? Like when OOTP comes out, do you think they will have all five Dvd`s in a box set, like they usually do???
By the way, whats HD-DVD??? Ive never heard of it here.

Something wicked this way comes...
Now this makes me wonder if non-owners of HD-DVD/BD will get HP 5-7 on "optical disc" at all.
The "which one is gonna be the Betamax" question aside, both HD-DVD and BD are so full of ridiculous, over-the-top DRM, that I definitely won't buy a player for either format.
I hope Warner gets a clue and releases the remaining movies on DVD as well...

I really dislike when companies practice this. It just increases piracy as well as makes it difficult for people who have the dvds and misplace or break them to get replacements. We have children, do you honestly expect nothing to happen to the dvds over the course of 10 years? Its ridiculous that you wont be able to get these during whatever time frame they decide on.
