The Harry Potter fan conference Lumos 2006
in Las Vegas is being hailed
by one teacher delegate in the Tononto Star as "a Harry Potter playground for adults" as the event gets underway today.
About 40 Canadians are flying in (on planes, not brooms) according to the article, including teacher/librarian Deanna Lombardi:
Her main mission is to bring back a little more Harry Potter magic for her students at St. Michael Catholic Academy in Thornhill.
Lombardi is among the growing number of educators who have seized on the popularity of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels to encourage her students to read.
She uses the books in her Grade 5 novel studies and says they are among the most popular in the St. Michael's library.
Editor's Note: This reporter will be in attendance as well! Stop by and say hello if you're there - check the HP Fan Trips
or HPANA/FictionAlley booth in the vendor room and be sure come to the panel I'm speaking on (about running a fan site).

Amazing! Just how much and how fast the Harry Potter phenomanon keeps compounding it's self. More and more educators are tuning into the Harry Potter mystique to capture the minds of their students. I have said before, I wonder if Ms. Rowling knows just how much she has changed the world. I hope it never ends. Blessings! Hecate3fold!

My cousin is going to this, I'm so jealous of her! Anyway, I've never been to a Harry Potter convention before, and I think that it would be really fun. And interesting.

I wish that we had something like that around here, but we don't and I better not get my hopes up so... Well the Lumos '06 has been hitting the posts in the yahoo forums that I am a member of and and they are meeting as "crafters" with special badges so I have heard plenty about Lumos this year.

Who are they kidding. All planes are is BROOMS that can handle MORE then one or two witch's or Wizards. As for the convention being put to such use.... I think its a wonderful Idea. After all Harry Potter has increased the reading in both Children and adults SO a convention being used my educators to help students can only be a VERY good thing.

I wish we would read them at school!! That would be soo cool. And it's brilliant that the teachers use the popularity of the series to make their students enjoying reading again. It's a wonderful method, but, alas, German teachers don't seem to use this to their advantage. At least not anythere around my area.

I am glad to hear that Lombardi is able to use the Harry Potter books for her students in her class. Nothing is more important from the HP series than the ability it has to make children want to read again. On another note, I hope the event is a success. It be nice to see some photos soon!

It is really surprising that she is allowed to use the Harry Potter books in a Catholic school... I am Catholic and they books are prohibitted. Good for her for using it to encourage reading, It's probably one of the best things she can use.
