Author JK Rowling explicitly clarified tonight on her final appearance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City that Dumbledore is "definitely" dead.
» UPDATE: Transcripts of both evenings are now available.
She, along with Stephen King and John Irving, hosted another 6,000 people as they read from their books to raise money for charity. Rowling surprised fans with several tantalizing tidbits about the finale of her popular Harry Potter series.
While the authors all read from the same passages of their books as last night, their introductions were handled by different surprise celebrities. Actor-director Tim Robbins (who starred in The Shawshank Redemption) introduced King and Stanley Tucci welcomed Irving.
Rowling was brought on stage (again to standing ovation) by Kathy Bates, who proclaimed that the author took kids to places "Google does not go," describing the effect Rowling's books have had in shaping an entire generation of digital-age kids. At first fearful of the prospect of seeing the Potter books be made into the very digital creations they were meant to draw children away from (at the same time ruining imagination with special effects), Bates said fans "faithfully returned to the books" after seeing their incarnations light up the silver screen, and that Rowling had created "readers for life."
One audience member greeted Jo by yelling "Don't kill Harry," to which Jo responded: "Oh, no pressure then."
Tonight's audience was treated with much more informative and revealing answers than yesterday. Here are a few highlights (again, paraphrased):
Rowling later revealed that while she thought she had settled on a title for book 7, a new one occurred to her in the shower this afternoon. She declined to elaborate.
She also suggested there were to be plot twists in book 7 that she didn't think anyone has already or could possibly guess about.
Stephen King, reponding to a question about what he is afraid of, said: "When I picked up the Harry Potter books, I was surprised at the depth of the deatheaters." To which Rowling replied tauntingly: "I scared Stephen King."

It does make sense because with Dumbledore alive, Harry can't stand alone. Harry needs to stand alone. He needs to fight Voldermort one on one.

And I was holding on to the hope that Dumbledore might not have died after all... for some reason I'm having a hard time imagining a Harry Potter book without a living Dumbledore...

Though i love the character Dumbledore.... i do think it would be very weird if he returned from death.
Or at least in the context it is written in the book.

I'm glad and relieved that Jo has said, with finality, that Dumbledore is, indeed, dead. I loved Dumbledore, and am still moved by his death every time I get to that part of the book. However, I have always felt that it would have done a grave injustice to our emotions, and cheapened them, if she turned around and said "Surprise!" he really isn't dead after all. Besides, Harry could no longer use him as a crutch (which Dumbledore knew full well), and it was essential for that character to be removed from the final book. However, as we all know, he isn't completely out of the story, since he does now have a portrait in The Head's office. And those portraits can come in handy! ;-)

(Question about upcoming deaths): You shouldn't expect Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf. I need to be more explicit: Dumbledore is definitely dead. I know there's an entire site out there called DumbledoreIsNotDead.com, and I'm sorry they're not going to like this answer.
FINALLY! haha. I knew it!!! hehe.
Wow a new title already. haha. I want her to tell us already.

I kinda wish that she hadn't clarified Dumbledore's death as final. I was very surprized to hear it first of all... and then realizing how surprized I was ~ I felt like I got a spoiler that I hadn't been expecting. I don't want to know anymore until the book comes out... I'll just keep guessing!

I was there last night... she's a great person. People wouldn't stop clapping and cheering when she came on. She took a few questions, but the people were chosen before hand, so she didn't actualy say " Ok who has a question?" and call on someone. She said right in the begining after she said "No preassure then?" "My only compensation is that I have the most interesting shoes." And then all the cameras zoomed in on her shoes, which was kind of funny. For the "which chracter would you take to lunch" thing, people were shouting out suggestions and some people were chanting Sirius's name...

Dead...definetly..dead..
Oh, the cruelty of the world!!
*sigh* I guess you can't have everything...
Harry's life no longer has a parental figure. First his parents die, then Sirius, now Dumbledore. I don't think you can really count Hagrid as a parental figure, so where does that leave him? He's come of age, true, but he no longer has a nurturing person in his life. What will he do?
I guess only Jo knows...

Well there you have it. Dumbledore is dead. I guess that sort of ends the discussion about that. That's kind of sad to be honest. Even though I always thought he was dead for sure, there was always that chance he'd be back.
Ohhhhh I want a title!!
