Well at least in the BigBadRead poll. JK Rowling's creation, Lord Voldemort from the Harry Potter novels, was voted
as the favorite literary villain of all time by British schoolchildren.
The BigBadRead poll was conducted by Bloomsbury, had more than 16,000 votes and JK had this to say of the honor:
I am thrilled and honoured beyond words that Lord Voldemort has been voted best villain in the BigBadRead poll.
I am not sure how he would react ot knowing that he had won a Muggles' unpopularity poll. A mixture of pleasure that you recognised his power and menace, coupled with fury at your nerve at mentioning his real name, I think. His author, however, is absolutely delighted.
UPDATE: You can read JK's comments in full here

Oh nice! The title was way off! =D
Hmm wonder if they'd do that sort of thing, the poll, over here...
Lex always did confuse me... He doesn't seem the bad guy half the time... or is that just the TV?

Well, can't say I disagree! Voldemort definitely deserves it!
I am also really pleased with the two below him. Sauron most certainly should be on the list, and Mrs. Coulter, while she redeems herself, is pretty darn wicked.
Yay!

Hmmm...I wonder what age group was polled. Seven of the top ten on the list were from movies. The thing I like best about Voldemort and Harry and Jo, is that they make children want to read.

Ha ha, well congratulations to him. I'd have voted for him, too, if I had been asked, anyway. He's definitely the most evil out of the other four.

Now that's pretty amazing that Lord Voldemort actually beats out Sauron, who is basically an evil demi-god. JKR should be very proud of her creation to win that kind of award.

That's not very surprising news, but personally I think that Sauron is a bit worse, he wanted to get rid of all men, not just muggles.
