While on a press junket for his new movie Tideland, director Terry Gilliam
answered questions as to why he hasn't directed a Harry Potter movie or if he will in the future.
When asked
if he would direct any of the movies, he said:
No. It's a factory job, is what it is. I don't like that. It's a big operation the way they run it now, and it's so heavily controlled by the studio, considering the kind of work i want to do. But it doesn't stop people on the web fantasizing about me doing the last one.
According
to Mr. Gilliam Prisoner was the best in the series so far:
MTV: What would your Potter have been like?
Gilliam: Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just shite. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it ... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done.
Thanks to Tim and TLC
for the links.

What is wrong with him? SS, COS, POA, and GOF are all incredibly good, and I can't pick one over other other. Well, yes, maybe I can. POA WAS a bit better than the first two, but the first two were really good, and really well done. This guy is crazy, he has completely lost his marbles.

You know, in a way, I actually do agree with him. The first two definitely don't capture the true essense of Harry Potter. The third was actually my favorite also, and I think that it's because of Sirius really, and how they Alfonso captured the connection between Sirius and Harry. Although of course I do like all of the movies, I do believe that I will side with Gilliam. Now, if he were to film the final movie, hearing what he's said, I think that it would be absolutely amazing. Just hearing him speak the way he does about it, it seems like he truly understands the actual magic of Harry Potter, not just the fact that there is indeed magical activity, but the fact that there is so much love in the essense of it all.

I disagree with his views. I thought the first two Potter films have been the truest to the books. All of the fims have been enjoyable so far.

A lot of you are missing the point by accusing Terry Gilliam of being "Hollywood" and how he's "full of himself". You must be too young to know any better: this man is a legend. As in, Monty Python, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Time Bandits, and Baron Muchausen. This isn't some crappy Hollywood director speaking, this is a legend in the field.
And to say that if he thinks he can do better, he should? Well, just watch any of the movies/series I've listed, and you'll see that he does, indeed, do better than the first two HP films. Way better.
Show some respect, people. This guy has accomplished more than anyone else here, and many people here have shown their complete ignorance by dismissing this guy as an "unknown".

Is he mad? The first two were not shite. Whenever you transfer a book to a movie there has to be some of it cut back or the movie would go on forever, anyone who doesn't like one (or more) of the movies is proberly upset that their fav bit got cut. That said, there is NOTHING wrong with any of the movies so far & I hope he does not direct any of the remaining ones.

Yeah... I think I agree with him about the first movies. But I think that the first ones are still good because they did make a lot of people want to read the books and get interested in Harry Potter and all the univers around it.

Hm, interesting. Sounds like he would've made a pretty good director for the Harry Potter films, but I think David Yates will make an excellent director as well. No one has seen any Harry Potter footage, but to me it sounds like he's doing a good job. I disagree with Mr. Gilliam though, I think the first two were pretty good.

woooow, grumpman, I thought the two first films were super cosy, especially ps, and really did capture the magic, I loved the third one but thought that some of the changes in scenery were a bit silly etc., for example, why make the fat lady look completely different from the first two films, and why change the grounds so obviously? why does the leaky cauldron look nothing like it did in the first films?
as for the forth film, I still love watching it, but it really is a shame the amount they had to cut... and i think in the third book, in the beginning, when harry spends time in diagon ally, there is still that cosy feel, but magic and feeling took second place to action and fast jumping from scene to scene in both the third and forth film...

BAh!! The first two movies followed the script better then the other movies. The 4th movie was bad.... it had neat graphics and all, but the story line(even without comparing it to the book) didn't flow.

Ohmigod! I thought his words were horrible. He said all that bad stuff about the Harry Potter production, studio, directors, and more, and I thought it was completely unnessisary thing to say. It was inappropriate dissing all of those people who have worked hard and created such a wonderful thing for people to enjoy. It was unneeded. I just cannot believe he said all that. Whatever
It's his loss.
PS> He wouldn't really do a good job anyway, I don't think he would at all!

I'm glad he doesn't want to do a movie. If he thinks PoA was good... Personally, I am just disgusted with the way PoA massacred the entire story. SS and CoS were the best ones because unlike the more recent two they were pretty close to canon.
