Back in July we posted a report that Harry Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths would be starring
in a production of Equus in the spring on London’s West End.
Now two Daniel Radcliffe fan sites, DR.co.uk
and DR.com
are giving fans the chance to purchase tickets for the play before they go on sale to the general public.
Dan had this to say in a message to both sites:
I just wanted to thank all my fans for the tremendous support you have shown me in my forthcoming role of Alan Strang in Peter Shaffer's Equus. As you know, this is an incredibly powerful drama and the decision to play this part was not one taken lightly. This role will stretch me as an actor further than I can possibly imagine and I am so excited to be involved in this production and to be directed in my theatre debut by one of the most talented directors working today, Thea Sharrock. I am also delighted to be starring opposite Richard Griffiths who of course, aside from playing 'my Uncle Vernon' was just recently awarded a Tony for his performance in The History Boys. He is truly a remarkable actor and there is no one I'd rather have guide me through this unique stage experience. Thank you again, your support means the world to me".
Please go to both sites for information on the Equus web site as well as information on dates and ticket prices.

Good luck to both Richard Griffiths and Dan on the upcoming play. Well, mostly good luck to Dan because this is the first time he's done something like this whereas Richard Griffiths is already a freakin stage god. So yeah.

I think its good that he does other stuff and this will hoefully mean that he wont be typecast too much in the future! Theres a halloween drama with Cedric Digory (forgotten the actors name) in it and he plays a person in a wheelchair, and it looks really good.

SnapesSorceress says:
I always de-lurk when the Equus topic comes up. First I just want to say that anybody who goes is very fortunate. Equus is a classic and is highly respected throughout the theatre community. That said, I hope that people know what they are going to. It is as opposite from Harry Potter as one can get. I just hope parents don't take kids just because it's Daniel. It is NOT a play for anyone under 15 at least. And no, NOT because of the "infamous nude scene"--the nudity takes back seat to the psychological intensity of the story itself. On one hand it's extremely difficult to sit through, and on the other hand it's beyond riveting. Obviously the subject matter isn't for everyone, but that does not detract from the fact that Equus is one of the most outstanding pieces of work ever done for the theatre.
Another thing that continues to bother me is the sort of giggly sophomoric attitude toward the idea of Dan being naked. I was plain disgusted with how a lot of people handled the bath scene in Goblet. I only saw it three times, but every time there were those in the audience who acted so immaturely they ruined the scene for me--and it's one of my fave scenes and not bcause of "Harry" in the tub. I loved the part under water whith "Harry" and "Myrtle" and the egg's music. I didn't like Goblet much, but that was one scene that had beautiful cinematography. And the giggly people always ruined it for me. And it wasn't all young girls who acted that way--there were boys, teenagers, and a lot of adults who should have known better. I worry that Equus will attract that kind of mentality which would not only ruin the play, but the unprepared audience will be horribly disturbed. I just hope for the play's sake and for Dan's sake, people will educate themselves before they choose to go or bring young children!
And one other thing. I saw somewhere on an older post about Equus, someone said that they didn't like these adult roles Dan has been taking on. I'm sorry to burst whomever's bubble that was, but Daniel will be spending most of his life as an adult--that happens when kids grow up. You either support Dan as an actor, or you can stay stuck in a "Dan will always be Harry Potter" world. But it's not fair to Dan to try and keep him there with you.
SnapesSorceress (pleading with people to support Dan and to give Equus the respect it deserves--whether the story is your cup of tea or not--and for those lucky people who get to go to realize how incredibly fortunate they are!)

Okay, it's one thing for Daniel to actively pursue good roles that will extend and mature him as an actor away from the Potter series. It is another thing to actively seek out roles that will hopefully change his wholesome image. One would get the impression from interviews etc that this is what he is indeed doing.
Personally speaking, I think that this is a great pity. He can make it successfully as an actor without having to resort to crappy productions. (and I'm not referring to Eqqus).
