In an new interview
with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director David Yates, he comments on filming the movie, working with Dan Radcliffe and what the movie is really about.
There's a really interesting principle at the heart of this story. The ministry is this bureaucratic authoritarian regime trying to impose a fundamental doctrine on this liberal wacky school. The ministry isn't very good at accepting the beauty of differences. Everything has to fit in a box, and if it doesn't fit, it must be removed. The wonderful thing this story tells kids is that it's OK to be different.
I'm having the time of my life. It's like being at filmmaking gym. You're working every single muscle as a storyteller. These films are full of comedy, adventure and a bit of thrills. It's terrific.
The Newsweek issue will be on sale next week. Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

David Yates sounds really intellegent. Parents can't argue with that explanation.

Cool comments, I hadn't thought of the book as exactly what he says, but something like it... I guess.. I think really the ministry is more evil than he makes them out, but, well, ok... Sounds ok... :)

David Yates speaks clearly about the message for OOtP - it is definitely okay to be different, and this story shares that message.

I'm so anxious to see what Yates has done with the book (I guess what the screenwriter(s) have done as well - I wonder what the "look" of the film will be - if it will have a noticeable stamp on it being his film. I'm going to get Newsweek this week - hopefully there will be some good pics along with the article!

I wouldn't necessarily call the school liberal as much as truthful and accepting. However, it is very true that the ministry, or at least, Umbridge, is horribly prejudiced. Not only that, but ironically it is the Ministry that needs the lesson: "I must not tell lies". (Yet again, I must express my distress at the change of that phrase in the movie. It is so much more powerful as "I must not tell lies" than as "I must not break rules". HONESTLY!!! Doesn't the concept of irony mean anything to them?)
Don't misunderstand me. I think he's doing an awesome job with the movie so far. The reason I sound so annoyed is because that change of phrase is the sole problem I have so far, therefore I'll harp on it alot. :)

I think he is the perfect choice to direct this movie, I like how they see what happens with the Ministry and the school. It's a great compliment what he said about Dan, I'm sure he is great in the movie.
shadowquill, obviously Jo didn't have a problem with that change, we know he frequently talks with her. We don't even know if it was her idea, and I don't think anyone knows better these books than her. So if she thinks it's ok, then it's ok. Remember she doesn't want them to be literal. The important thing is not the details, it's the story, and they obviosly understand the story very well.
They talk with Jo, so I'm sure they know more things than us, and understnad the book the same or more than us. It's senseless to think we know more than everyone else.

Fionnuala says:
Shadowquill- the school is liberal in the classical (not the current American usage) sense of the word, in that the pupils enjoy and teachers enjoy a lot of liberty and disgression in the way they conduct themselves, and there is no strict heirarchy and (apparently) little bureaucracy.

Yes, all the books have shown that it's okay to be different but have all the movies? No, I don't think so. So far all the movies have done is conform to cliches and stereotypes to show exactly why it's not okay to be different. I'm really liking Yates and I hope he doesn't conform to silly cliches and actually bring some depth to his characters and he seems as if he's trying to do that.

I wonder if Yates has read the books? Some of the hp directors, maybe all of them, have actually not read the books and only go by the script! By the looks of this film Yates did a fantastic job with everything, but of course we wouldn't know because we haven't seen it! I can't wait to see this film!! I am seriously going to loose it when the seventh book comes out....probably die of shock that we actually have reached the end....

So i hoppe he' ll make a better job than Mike Newell in GoF (because in GoF it looks like if he even didnt read the book)!
