JKR: Character in 'Phoenix' movie had to stay so he can appear in book 7 Popular (21243)

At the Harry Potter press conference on Saturday, producer David Heyman was tightlipped when responding to a question about whether a certain character was cut from Order of the Phoenix:

"Jo reads each draft," David Heyman had said. "She reads each screenplay, and she said, 'You know, I wouldn't do that if I were you. Or you can, but if you get to make a seventh film, you'll be tied in knots.'" "Which character was it?" the Boston Herald asked. "I thought you might ask that," Heyman teased. "I'm not going to say."

Well, director David Yates has now let slip to MTVopens in new window that it was... (Potential spoiler warning!)

"It was Kreacher, actually," director David Yates confirmed to MTV News on Sunday. "We took Kreacher out, and Jo said, 'Listen guys, you don't have to put Kreacher back, but I'm just telling you, if you want to kind of keep a thread going for six and seven, you might want Kreacher to come back.' She basically told us Kreacher plays a role in Seven, in a sense. She hinted. We thought about it for five seconds, and he came back."

What you won't see in the Kreacher scenes, however, is him squirreling away any artifacts such as, say, a mysterious locket no one can open. "Bad David!" Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, teased his director about the locket's absence. "It was kind of tricky to raise that in our story, because it's for so much later," Yates said. “We figured we can probably introduce it later, and that’s the approach we took."

Sonorus, I think you have a good point about Kreacher maybe helping Regulus get the locket and destroying the Horcrux. RAB has been my theory, and with this little "slip", it seems to make even more sense.

Hmmm that's an interesting revelation. This character being that important. I mean he's there in 6 but 7 too. And the scenario is also quite important that can possibly confirm one horcrux theory.

I knew it would be him, because I was wondering if they are going to include him or not, and then I saw they did.. and of course he’s going to play a part in book 7. As for the object mentioned, well this just confirms to be that it is the object that it is suspected of being.

O'flaherty says:

Kreacher went with Regulus into the cave to get the locket. Kreacher's magic would not register with the boat, so it would sense no problem, as he is not "Mortal".
Now, this is where the theory stops, and incomes guess work.

Either A) Kreacher drank the harsh liquid in the goblet, and he was not alowed to drink the water in the lake, as he wasn't important, he was an elf. Hence, why he is loopy and unstable, and very devoted to his masters.
Or B) It was stated that they never found Regulus's body. Regulus could have drank the harsh liquid within the goblet, and when he cried for water Kreacher went for the water from the lake. The Inferi attacked, Regulus was murdered, and since house elfs can apparate (Think dobby and Hogwarts) where wizards cannot, he escaped, and was forever tormented that he caused his master's death.
Or C)Kreacher plays some other house elf'ish role

Well...that is very very intersting. I had a feeling that this character would be back. I'm sure its not an absolute critical role, but a role none-the-less in the last book.

Very interesting. I'm glad they are keeping Kreacher in, but now it makes me wonder what part he could play in the last book. Hopefully he won't be bad and go to the Malfoy's, or anything like that.

If Kreatcher is need so much for the seventh movie I'm beginning to think that maybe Kretcher is a Horcrux. The Black family was loyal enough to Voldemort and no one would think to look there.

That's not that much of a spoiler. I was kind of upset they took Mrs. Weasley out of 4 and look, now they need her in 5 and 6. I wish they would make a 5 hour version of OoTP. I'd watch it, with an intermisssion.
