This shouldn't be a surprise to fans but with only five days of release behind it Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has garnered
over $330 million from worldwide sales.
Domestically the movie has grossed $140 million since opening last Wednesday, making it the number one movie this weekend in the U.S. where it made $77.4 million. Overseas the movie reaped more than $190 million.
By comparison
, in its first five days the movie is $30 million ahead of Goblet of Fire and over $40 million ahead of the last summer Potter release, which was Prisoner of Azkaban. Still, the fifth moive in the franchise didn't make as much in total as the previous movies for weekend tallies.
Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. said:
We're in the middle of summer, and we just said why not, because kids are out of school. It certainly turned out to be the right decision.
Order of the Phoenix did more business in five days than each of the first three Harry Potter movies did in their first full week, and it nearly matched the $146 million first week total of the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
UPDATE: The movie has also broken
virtually every opening box office record at IMAX® theatres during its debut, contributing $7.3 million of the $140. The fifth movie also broke the record for IMAX's largest single day worldwide total at $1.9 million and posted a domestic opening per screen average of $80,500.

I am happy for WB and Jo they deserve all the rewards they can garner from HP.
I wonder how it will do this coming weekend? Do you think the numbers will drop with all the HP fans out buying the final book. What if Harry dies? Will that hurt OoTp as well as the subsequent films? It is going to be interesting to see how things work out.

I think you cannot compare this movie being weaker on its weekend opening to its previous. It's entirely a different matter opening on a Wednesday. Of course the fans already watched it on the first or 2nd day, so obviously, they have smaller sum on the weekend.
I just don't understand why they are not doing as much as what other movies are doing in North America or the domestic box-office?
Regardless, I'm so proud of the film. Yay! The Spiderman fans already are defending their movie when the news came out that HP broke their 1st day record on a midweek!

Good googly moogly that's a lot of money in just five days!!!
o.O
I agree with everyone who has said OotP is a better film than GoF was. I'm planning on seeing it again some time soon with my uncle, and I usually don't watch movies more than once (when they are still in theatres).
Harry Potter will take over the world. *evil cackle*

With all that money they made, and I'm sure they expected to, they should have spent more on the film.
I was disappointed, after watching it, I thought "is this it???". I knew they were going to hack the book up, but to know that the longest book got made into the shortest film (as is reported, I will have to confirm) really makes you think "what was the director trying to prove?"
I blame the script writer and the director. AT least for the last two movies, we get the original script writer back, so that should be a huge improvement. To me the director's attitude is the same as some people from a club i belong to - he is excited because it will make money no matter what he does, so he just did a crap job and thought good of himself.
A friend said that it seemed to him that only people who had read the book would understand half of what was going on, and it assumed you already knew back story. And I agree with him.
There were plenty of silent moments in the film which should have had sound behind them. I was sitting there waiting for ambience, and got none. This film really seems to lack heart. To me, it was like someone just trying to very quickly tell you the facts from book 5, and leave out depth.
And what irks me is the credits! How much money do they have??? And they make the credits white writing on plain black background!!! What they hell are they thinking???!!!! POA changed the setting, GOF put it up a notch and made things fun. OOTP put a bad taste in my mouth and has made me think of not wanting to see the other two monstrosities in store for us from the same director.

Personally, I thought this film was the best of the series; yes, there were tons of scenes cut but did you honestly expect them to keep everything? Taking aside all that was cut from the movie it was really, really good.
In summation, it deserves to be making this much money. =] haha

Well - I am not in the least surprised by the figures. Every single session of IMAX yesterday was sold out in Sydney, and at $25 per ticket they must be raking in the cash!!
Well done Harry Potter!

I thought it would do better because its in the summer and kids are out of school. It was also, in my opinion the best movie of the five so far. It was a good decision.

I'm not surprised that the movie has grossed as much as it has, given that there are many, many obsessive HP fans who wanted to see the film as soon as it came out. We'll see what the final weekend tallies are, as it is still early Sunday evening on the West Coast.

I'm not suprised the movie made that much money.Afterall it is Harry Potter.I finally got the chance to see the movie Friday night and personally I thought it was awful. They totally butchered it.I had high hopes for the movie after reading the reviews and other member comments but after seeing it, I felt really disappointed. So now I'm just longing for the book which I highly doubt will be a disappointment me.
