Update: After 5 days 'OotP' has made over $330 million worldwide Popular (3483)

This shouldn't be a surprise to fans but with only five days of release behind it Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has garneredopens in new window over $330 million from worldwide sales.

Domestically the movie has grossed $140 million since opening last Wednesday, making it the number one movie this weekend in the U.S. where it made $77.4 million. Overseas the movie reaped more than $190 million.

By comparisonopens in new window, in its first five days the movie is $30 million ahead of Goblet of Fire and over $40 million ahead of the last summer Potter release, which was Prisoner of Azkaban. Still, the fifth moive in the franchise didn't make as much in total as the previous movies for weekend tallies.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. said:

We're in the middle of summer, and we just said why not, because kids are out of school. It certainly turned out to be the right decision.

Order of the Phoenix did more business in five days than each of the first three Harry Potter movies did in their first full week, and it nearly matched the $146 million first week total of the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

UPDATE: The movie has also brokenopens in new window virtually every opening box office record at IMAX® theatres during its debut, contributing $7.3 million of the $140. The fifth movie also broke the record for IMAX's largest single day worldwide total at $1.9 million and posted a domestic opening per screen average of $80,500.

Wow, that's insane. But not unexpected. And completely deserved. This was the best one yet, I think. I'm happy to say that I contributed about $20 to that total. :D

This is incredible. Many movies will never make this amount of money throughout their whole run in the theatres. That just comes to show you how strong the HP fandom is. I saw it on Friday and it was Awesome. Can't wait to see it again next weekend.

Congratulations!

Saw Dan Radcliffe's half-hour interview with Larry King on CNN Sunday night. I liked his response to the last question from a fan, the one about what he would use his wand for in real life. Hemmed and hawed before King prompted him with "World Peace", then cracked, "That's a Miss America answer... that's the one I'm going with!" High comedy!

And of the $330 million, say $200 million goes into production cost (not including salaries), and we know about $50 million goes to Dan (or some obnoxiously large amount like that), around $2.5 million each go to Emma and Rupert, and goodness knows how much is going to the other big actors... is WB making a profit in the end? Well, since this is just the first week, I suppose they start raking in the real profits next week, and also from DVD sales, which will be incredible as well. I can't wait for the DVD to come out because I can already see some of the deleted scenes that were in the trailers but not in the movie.

It also helps that it so much better than the others. Finally a satisfying adaptation. Only complaint was that the Percy story should have been developed if they were going to just pop him into a scene.

It's scary to think of that much money heading off to see a film. I"m not sure what they mean by not making more than the others...is that because the others made more over the weekend and this one made it up during the week?

This is really nice to hear. The movie series has been getting better and better with each new film, and it's good to see that ticket sales reflect that fact. I saw the movie in IMAX, and the theater was completely full, so I'm not surprised it's breaking records. I can't wait to go see it again!

Exactly, these things are never a surprise to me. Harry Potter is bound to do well, anywhere, until it's all over. 330 million dollars? Worldwide? That's it? Haha, it should break into the billions one of these days. Maybe with the Deathly Hallows movie. Hmm, did the Deathly Hallows book bring in over a billion dollars?
