As excepted the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows broke records this weekend with Scholastic reporting
that 8.3 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the U.S., while UK publisher Bloomsbury sold
2.6 million copies in the same time period.
In a statement on Sunday Scholastic president Lisa Holton said:
The excitement, anticipation, and just plain hysteria that came over the entire country this weekend was a bit like the Beatles' first visit to the US.
This weekend kids and adults alike are sitting on buses, in the park, on airplanes and in restaurants reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The conversations the readers have been waiting to have for 10 years have just begun.
UPDATE: Results worldwide indicate that 72 million copies of the book were sold
over the weekend.
The fifth movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix fell
a notch to the number 2 spot in weekend sales. The drop was anticipated because of the release of the seventh book with Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' head of distribution commenting:
They wanted to get that book Saturday, lock themselves in the house and read it, because they didn't want their other friends by Monday telling them who made it and who didn't.
Order of the Phoenix took in an estimated $32.2 million over the weekend for a $207.5 million total in 12 days in the U.S and over $558.8 million worldwide, which is slightly ahead of the last picture, Goblet of Fire, after 12 days.

It broke record being the last book. But, it was odd that over 8 million copies were sold in the U.S. and only 2 million were sold in the U.K. ?

Well that doesn't surprise me. Everyone was going into solitude to read the book. To be honest, I was very excited for Order of the Phoenix but what I was really waiting for was Deathly Hallows!

I wonder if she does write the encyclopedia if it will break the record for Deathly Hallows. I think it would be big but not as big as the DH release.

I loved the book. It was the best ending that we could ever have hoped for. For me it is at equal first place with Half-Blood Prince, though i guess the two are linked in many ways. They are the same book but in two parts.

It is not surprising that it is selling so much. I know people who bought two and three copies of different editions. That is just amazing to me. I haven't even finished reading my one copy. But soon I will!

Okay, so I admit, I was a Harry Potter movie addict, only, until December/January of last year. And Finally getting the book, well, I just have to say that I was extreamly pleased with Mrs. Rowlings book. SHe has no idea how much influnce she has plaid on my life. It's a great hounor to grow up in this generation that she was ganted with this, mirical (if it is). I just feel greatly hounord. And I wish Mrs. Rowling the best of luck in what ever she does!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows broke records? *gasp Why am I not surprised? Whoa, Scholastic sold more than 3 times as much as Bloomsbury - well, not too surprising... that version is the more popular version in the world - that's the one they sell in Jamaica. Hehe, that's true, why would a Harry Potter fan waste time watching the movie again when the book's just been released?
