As excepted the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows broke records this weekend with Scholastic reporting
that 8.3 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the U.S., while UK publisher Bloomsbury sold
2.6 million copies in the same time period.
In a statement on Sunday Scholastic president Lisa Holton said:
The excitement, anticipation, and just plain hysteria that came over the entire country this weekend was a bit like the Beatles' first visit to the US.
This weekend kids and adults alike are sitting on buses, in the park, on airplanes and in restaurants reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The conversations the readers have been waiting to have for 10 years have just begun.
UPDATE: Results worldwide indicate that 72 million copies of the book were sold
over the weekend.
The fifth movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix fell
a notch to the number 2 spot in weekend sales. The drop was anticipated because of the release of the seventh book with Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' head of distribution commenting:
They wanted to get that book Saturday, lock themselves in the house and read it, because they didn't want their other friends by Monday telling them who made it and who didn't.
Order of the Phoenix took in an estimated $32.2 million over the weekend for a $207.5 million total in 12 days in the U.S and over $558.8 million worldwide, which is slightly ahead of the last picture, Goblet of Fire, after 12 days.

I have to admit, that since January I had my book reserved - I couldn't wait to read Deathly Hallows, and I had alread seen OOTP in IMAX but plan on seeing it again this weekend. So I think like many others reading the book was more important to me that seeing the movie again, I loved Deathly Hallows! It is my favourite! love to JKR! xx

I love the idea that the only reason that OotP fell to # 2 was because all of the HP fans world-wide were locked in their houses reading DH and could not be bothered to venture out... even for the spectacular movie. Luckily I'd already seen OotP twice before Saturday so I could read without worry!

I pre-ordered my copy in December and received it on the release date. I started reading in the store before getting back home to keep reading till 4 a.m. Some purchased it in the store but many French readers here will have to wait till October 25th to know everything. I couldn't possibly wait for so long.

I read the book and avoided watching any news reports in case the ending was revealed. Already seen OOTP and it was great, looking forward to seeing at an IMAX next time.

No surprises here. When I was at the midnight release for DH, the line wound all the way around the bookstore (and it was one of those huge mega-stores) and then out the doors and down the street. There were at least 6 of those plus a bunch of smaller ones around the city too... great night. As for the movie dropping a notch, their guess sounds reasonable, but it had to happen at some point.

It was an absolute crack-up over the weekend when my friend and I were reading Deathly Hallows. We could look across to the caravan next to ours and see that the man sitting on his front verandah was reading ... Deathly Hallows!
It's not suprising that the weekend takings of the movie were down - all true Harry Potter fans were 'inside' their books! But now I've read it, I'm keen to see the movie again.

sinjun13_granger: In the U.S. i think "i pronounce you chuck and larry" is number 1 right now. and OOTP comes second.
But anywayz i got the book at 12:40 a.m. and started reading it till 4 a.m. coz i had to work the next day at 10 pm. but i took the book to work and read and read hoping that my boss didnt catch me (he didnt) and then went back home and read and i was done on sunday in the evening. It was just so interesting and i couldn't do something else when it was right there in my room. it was definitely the BEST book from the whole series!!! and am happy that it earned so much:)

I thought that the movie would fall this weekend, we were too exctied about DH for anything else to happen.
However, most of us have finished DH and are probabyly on read # 2 or more, so we can relax and go back to the theaters, now.

It broke record being the last book. But, it was odd that over 8 million copies were sold in the U.S. and only 2 million were sold in the U.K. ?
