David Thewlis, who portrays Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series, is currently in Toronto attending the International Festival of Authors
where he is promoting his new book The Late Hector Kipling.
During an interview
he gave his thoughts on J.K. Rowling's recent revelation about Dumbledore and feelings about his own character.
The funny thing when Alfonso Cuarón directed The Prisoner of Azkaban, the first film that I appear in, he had the idea that Lupin was gay and he described my character like a 'gay junkie' . And of course Lupin turns out not to be gay because he marries Tonks and has children.
Thanks to Joseph for the tip.

HA! Who the hell would think Lupin was gay. Gosh Cuaron really is crazy. Okay well this is going to turn into a faux pas thing that Rowling did.

Nice to hear from Dave Thewlis on this one. For the record, I never thought Lupin was gay. Werewolves don't make especially great spouses.
Hope the new book sells well!

Hmmm...apparently I was the only one who thought Lupin may have been gay! It was just kind of feeling I had, but obviously it was wrong. I am very glad he married Tonks and had little Teddy. I always thought maybe being a werewolf was kind of a meatphor for being gay...mirroring the way people of the gay/lesbian community are treated in our own culture...obviously I was reading way too far into it!

Haha. You could tell that's what Alfonso thought too. From the way Sirius and Lupin interacted, to the conversation between Lupin and Harry when he decided to leave. There are HP fans who always had slashy thoughts of Sirius and Lupin too. So it is kind of amusing really.

I don't think Alfonso Cuaron literally meant that he thought Lupin was gay or that Thewlis should play him as gay, but that as a werewolf the character would have been discriminated against just as many gay people are discriminated against in real life.

David Thewlis wrote a book?! Neat. I wonder if it's any good.
Ironic, what Cuaron said, because clearly Lupin's the straight one and Dumbledore isn't!

I was so happy when I found out that Lupin and Tonks got married. I can kinda see why Alfonso would think that Lupin might be gay, but I'm glad that hes not. I can't wait to see him play in the last two movies. It's going to be awsome.

Interesting! As much as I love Alfonso, I never ever pictured Lupin gay. And I'm not entirely sure what the term "gay junkie" even means.
I'm glad to hear that Thewlis is working on Half Blood Prince! :)

This is why Cuaron was the next-to-worst of the directors (and you know who I'm talking about). He tried to take it away and make it his own story, superimpose his own ideas into the characters instead of sticking with JK's. Kind of like how Yates gave Dudley a lisp. Seriously guys.

I completely understand having a preference for a particular director's style of telling Harry Potter's story in one of the films, but this new bit of information doesn't necessarily point to Alfonso Cuaron being overly intrusive into Jo's original vision for her book. His explanation of Lupin as a "gay junkie," I believe, is just Cuaron using fancy/artsy director terminology to metaphorically refer to Lupin being an ostracized werewolf in need of a wolfsbane potion (withdrawal symptoms include excess hair, howling, and aggression). I believe Jo has said that she wrote Lupin's character precisely to illustrate the kind of discrimination that she despises and which villians like Umbridge practice so freely. So how is Cuaron having this interpretation another example of his ruining of POA and grounds for his complete barring from future involvement in the franchise? Sorry if I got a little passionate there, but I love and respect everything about Harry Potter so much that I don't like to see anyone involved in the books or films insulted unnecessarily.

That's funny but NOOOO Lupin is not gay, I don't know. but I think Dumbledore being gay is getting too much attention, and a lot of people is makig too much drama, just one thing

Haha - well I can tell you one thing Alfonso Cuarón wasn't alone when he had the idea that Remus Lupin was gay. Like half the fan girls on the net thought that as well. I suppose it's mean to use the word 'fan girls' but still, somehow I never got that impression of Lupin even after reading and seeing the Prisoner of Azkaban. I wonder why Alfonso Cuarón got the impression that Lupin was gay? The book really didn't hint at it at all, or not that I read into anyway.

I love the fact that besides being an actor, he is also a writer. That does give an effect on understanding a character. In his case, no one (Except Ms. Rowling) before book 6 know that Lupin and Tonks are going to be married. So that 'gay junkie' thing, quite be an accurate description on understanding the character.
