Tim Roth as Prof. Snape, really Popular (4567)

Have you ever wondered who else might have been cast to play Prof. Snape in the Harry Potter movies? Well, in a recent interview actor Tim Roth opens in new windowmentioned that he had been offered the role but decided to do Tim Burton's version of Planet of the Apes.

Mr. Roth statesopens in new window:

I was going to do both films [Potter and Planet of the Apes]. We rigged it so that I could fly back and forth. They figured out the schedule but it just got to be overwhelming in my mind. My kids really liked the books. They were really into me doing it, but the idea of being an ape with Tim was too good.

I would have made [Snape] a very different guy. But in the end I think it was the right decision since Alan’s had some success with the character.

Ahhh yes tim roth. well i'm having a hard time imagining him as snape already. i think Alan Rickman has pretty much done the job extremely well. Perfectly in fact and fans wouldn't want it any other way. but tim roth is a great actor no doubt about it

Wow, that's crazy! Tim Roth sort of looks like Professor Snape though....mh...can't say it was a good idea to pick Alan because I don't really know Tim Roth that well.

I have read somewhere that JK Rowling was also agree with Alan Rickman as Prof Snape. And then she put the way he portray the character into Snape in later books.

Err.. Tim who?

'Some success' is complete B.S.

And if he did do Snape different from Rickman, I very much doubt us fans or even JKR herself would have been pleased!

Alan is absolutely perfect for the role of PROF. Snape. Tim could have never got into the character better than Alan.

It was lucky for HP that Tim decided to take up Planet of the Apes so that Alan could get the role and have lots and lots of success with the character.

I am VERY glad that Mr. Roth decided to do Planet of the Apes instead of Harry Potter. Alan Rickman is superb and I can't imagine anyone else as Snape. He exibits an incredible character depth that I frankly have never seen in Tim Roth's outings.
Regarding Mr. Roth's last comments: "But in the end I think it was the right decision..." For Harry Potter fans indeed it was!
He continues: "...since Alan’s had some success with the character." Does this sound like Sour Grapes??? How many people actually know who Tim Roth is?

Besides visually ... I can't picture a 5'7" Snape.

This is very interesting, but Alan's the only guy that can play Severus (at least that's how I feel)! No one can hit Harry and Ron on the head with a book like he can!

It's actually quite hard for me to imagine anyone else other than Alan Rickman being Snape, as he has made the character his own. But on the other hand, if Tim Roth had been cast as Snape, we'd be saying the same thing about Alan!!

I'm happy with all the Harry Potter casting to date (with the obvious exception of Michael Gambon, but them's the breaks!).

Who could say Michael Gambon was bad casting, Tikihaha?! The old Dumbledore had trouble getting out of his seat, he hardly seemed the "the greatest wizard who ever lived" when he was practically a fossil. Gambon captured the truly eccentric and powerful Albus Percival Wolfric Brian Dumbledore we all know from the books.
