The Los Angeles Times just broke the long-rumored news
that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be split into two films, directed by David Yates from a script by Steve Kloves.
The report cites producer David Heyman and says the official announcement will be made tomorrow by Warner Bros. The films, simply titled "Part One" and "Part Two," will be released in November 2010 and May 2011 respectively.
Earlier today, SnitchSeeker posted an account
from a fan who said actor Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) confirmed this news at Collectormania.
[Note: While visiting the set of 'Half-Blood Prince' in January, this editor had a strong feeling these decisions had already been made, although reps and stars alike were quite coy during interviews. You may remember HPANA posted these unconfirmed suspicions but was asked by Warner Bros. to remove the article.]

I am the only who hates this I idea I guess...grrr...why split it up in two when you just have to wait to see the other part and then buy 2 dvds and ahh...they complicated things for nothing just to make profit. By 2011, I'll be too busy to go see the movie!
But it would be a nice idea in general I suppose...

I don't like that at all. They shoulda just make it one really long movie. Lord of the Rings did it and it was fine. And then they can add even more on the dvd. And why do we have to wait 2 years after Half Blood Prince? We've never had to do that. :(

I actually anticipate there being one long DVD. Since the movies are coming out only a few months apart (6 months) it seems almost reasonably to have one long DVD on two discs.
I'm thrilled about this, I thing the longer the fandom lasts, the better! Also, I think they may use this extra time to go back and explain some of the things they have been neglecting in the previous movies!

Yeah! This is great news I think. And I do remember the article HPANA posted back in January. Funny how Yates said just one or two days ago that he was 'tempted' :)

Well, bum.
I'm glad that they want to do the film justice, but this fangirl will go mad waiting for the second part, and there's going to be TWO YEARS between Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows!
I'd reconciled myself to the fact that I'd have to wait until July 2010 to see DH, going by the usual 18 month release pattern, but having to wait until November 2010 is going to be awful. Blah.

I'm not sure how I feel about this news. Sure with two films they won't have to cut as much out of the book. I agree though waiting for months to see part 2 will be really annoying and then having to buy two DVD's etc. Plus it does seem like just a way to make more money really!

Well said, Prof.Dish!!
I think that it can only be a positive thing if they use the two movies to "tie-up" all the loose ends they've left from the previous movies, and really have an AWESOME Battle of Hogwarts!!! Throw everything into it, and it should be the best two-parter movie in movie history.
If only they can recast Dumbledore, I will be totally satisfied!!

I'm *very* excited. Despite that other movies could've used two parts, I agree with David Heyman in that subplots are easier to cut in those movies. Even though us fans love them, it's easier take those out. Deathly Hallows has no such luck! Every little bit is important. And it is true that they can tie up other loose ends in the past 5/6 movies! Extremely excited. :)

Wow! I wasn't sure that the split thing was actually going to happen, but lo and behold, it did! I'm fine with it, and also okay with Yates directing - and thrilled that Kloves is back as screenwriter. Didn't he disappear for awhile to do another movie?
The only bad thing is that the movies are so far from now - 2010 and 2011! Still, it's very exciting.

WHOA, that's big news!! I'm torn though, because I don't want to have to wait six months between the films, but then again, they can also do the book absolute justice this way, hopefully.... Hm... I think I'm happy with this decision.
So because they have the two films, I have high expectations for the content... don't let me down!

Thats really cool. Deathly Hallows has so many important things to cover; leaving parts out of the final book would just be disrespectful to Rowling and her work. So I'm glad they're splitting it up so they dont have to leave anything out!

Maybe it is for the best, i mean there is a lot of content in the DH so this just might be what is needed to get me back into the harry potter world again. But i would hate to see part 1 end like LOTR: FotR did. Also it would be bad if the releases were 1 year apart.

It sucks because .. .like the Matrix and the Pirate movies... the suspense kills the effect of the second one.. but I think the true Potter fans will hold true.

I'll say it again. Too little too late.
It was so disappointing to have so much of the other books cut out. The fact is that everything is essential to the plot in book seven and there are no sub plots to be cut.
Now the question remains as to where and how to divide the book into two movies.
The only thing that will appease me at this point is having the movies done to the letter of the book and not eliminate anything for cost. Time will tell.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

Its a good idea, but has anyone realized that after the 6th movie comes out you have to wait 2 years for the next one. I think I can handle that though, I have been waiting 6 years for the new X-Files movie sequel to come out. I just hope they can do it right, anyone can split up a movie, but it just has to be right.

Hmm...I don't know. I like that there will be more detail in it, and we'll get to see much, much more. But I'm also a little weirded out by the Part I and Part II thing. I think it will be weird to see 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows...Part I' on the screen. Oh well, I can't wait anyway. It's gonna be sweet. That's just prolonging my Harry Potter experience.

Yates as Director, Kloves as screenwriter, Deathly Hallows Parts I & II .... Well Done! & Thank You!
The wait will be excrutiating BUT worth it! :-)

Exciting but I don't like it.
First, we have to wait 2 whole years for the 7th movie after we watch the 6th. And then another 6 months for the ending?
Just make the movie longer!
But IDK..
