The shorter-than-short Harry Potter prequel by author J.K. Rowling is now available to read online at Waterstone's web site. The story, handwritten on the front and back of a note card, was one of 12 from various authors auctioned for the bookseller's What's Your Story? charity fundraiser. Rowling's went for nearly $50,000.
It begins:
The speeding motorcycle took the sharp corner so fast in the darkness that both policemen in the pursuing car shouted...

and then click on "Read our authors' stories" and then J.K. Rowling to view the entire prequel!
UPDATE: The auction winner, Hira Digpal, president of Tokyo-based investment-banking consulting company Red-33, says
that he wants to raise more money for charity with his purchase and has notified Rowling's publishers of his wishes:
Here I am, owning a piece of literary history. I think I got a bargain. Hopefully, we can raise much more than the sale.

Thank you Ginny Weasleypants for taking the time to type it out, I am forever grateful. I really struggled to read her handwriting. As for the prequel itself, I loved reading it. Still I'm not a big fan of James or Sirius but I would still love to read a prequel if she wrote one, which I hope she will.

So I went to Mugglenet's forums to test my theory and realized that I didn't have an actual account there, so I decided to test my theory by seeing if I could enroll as "Elvendork" and it let me... so now *I* am Elvendork... hehehehehehe... love it... and love my Marauder boys.

Well it was good! Very hard to read, but I liked it! It showed how cocky and funny James and Surius were, which I liked! It didn't have much to do with the plotline of Harry Potter, which was good. I liked just reading a funny short story with some familiar characters! Good Job Rowlling!

If we order it, will it be typed, etc.? Just curious if I should spend my money on it.

Elvndork.......hahahah I love it.
Nice that jk took advantage of the postcard.....her writing was small and hard to read but I am glad that she fit in as much on that as possible.
I am also loving the 'seriously black" quote by the police officer.

I want to read more, although I find it sensible not to release a prequel. I enjoy J.K.R.'s writing. This short excerpt has much of the spirit of Harry Potter about it, even if it's supposed to be independent from any larger work. The incipit of Philosopher's Stone is enough to start with, and too many details about what happened before would make the whole series a bit flavourless.

Wow, that is amazing! I actually felt the same kind of thrill I felt when first reading DH. Who were the guys on the broomsticks? Death eaters? Oh my goodness, I feel like crying with happiness. Thanks, JK, for adding another bit of magic to my world. I love you. I'm gonna go ask my mum if I can pre-order it now.
(By the way, guys, read the stuff by the other authors too - they seem quite good even though I haven't read them all yet.)

Well I can't say I found it very enlightening, and it wasn't very entertaining either. I never thought I'd say this, but, I'm disappointed!

It wasn't that good. I think the hype round it built it up too much. Maybe if the writing was a little easier to read it would have been better.

Ha! J.K. Rowling, you tease. It was amsusing though. Perhaps it's good that James wasn't able to have any more kids. Otherwise, one of them might have gotten stuck with Elvendork.

I will also add my thanks to ginny weasleypants. I was getting no where trying to read to original.
It left some questions, like who were they running from? I guess we will never know for sure.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

I felt totally weird reading that -- I don't think I breathed the whole time! I'm especially glad I somehow forgot it was going to be available online today -- what an amazing treat! I know a lot of people complained that it was hard to read, but the fact that it is written in JKR's own hand makes it that much more incredible to get a look at, for me, anyway. It was an enjoyable moment in James and Sirius' friendship.

She should definitely write a prequel! I know she isn't, and it's not like anyone can make her, but it would definitely be cool.
Sirius and James reminded me of the Weasley twins, in how seamlessly they work together in their shenanigans. JK Rowling is really a great writer, and I can't wait for more from her.
