With the 1,000th issue of Entertainment Weekly on newsstands today, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire book is included
at the number 2 spot on their 'New Classics Books' list.

The first three Harry Potter novels were pure kid stuff, and then, unexpectedly, Rowling went epic and dark - killing children, resurrecting evil, and sending Harry to war.
The full list can be viewed here on their site. The special double issue hits newsstands today and has Daniel Radcliffe, Bono, Will Smith, Lisa Simpson and Johnny Depp on the cover.

4th to post! YAY! Well, anyway, I did love the 4th book, I mean it was amazing, but still kind of creepy... but it was great. And HOW DARE THEY say the first 3 books were "pure kid stuff"?!?!? I loved those books! I will admit they weren't as dark, but I liked it that way!

AHHH! number 2!!!! That's great! I love it, i'm so happy. Goblet of Fire was always my first favorite book, it seemed so much more REAL! That's the book that made me become a true Harry Potter fan.

And do they have to be "dark" for adults to enjoy them, or for it to be "great"? *sigh* Whatever. (hey, on the bright side, a Harry Potter book did make it on the list!)

I've only read a few on that List. Personally at least one of the other Harry Potters should be on there. And some of the ones they selected were Okay, but my list would have been a little bit different.

Really? I never thought of the other three as kiddy books personally. I just saw them as Harry was only that age and as he gets older than the reality of life and the books certainly get darker.
But that's great about it being number 2 or whatever.

I was unhappy. And, can you believe this? The movies didn't make the llist at all! Crazy Pulp Fiction was voted the #1 movie! Are you kidding me?

It's fantastic that it made it on to the list, but you can't exactly put much stock in a list created by a entertainment magazine. But I do understand why they chose Goblet of Fire. It is the first book which was darker, and strayed away from safety and childhood to a more adult and real world.
Oh, and by the way, it's Maggie Simpson, not Lisa, who is on the cover. :]

Yes, it is kind of weird, GoF was singled out... The whole saga should have been put on the list, as one. I wouldn't object to that. Well, Pullman's His Dark Materilas hit it on altogether as one item. And it's 3 books. Why did they judge GoF as the one from all the HP books to be the one that deserves the honour?... Anyhow, it doesn't make sense, nobody can really enjoy HP by just reading GoF and none of the others...

GoF? That was absolutely one of my least fave HP books(my least fave being HBP). Deathly Hallows was absolutely the best HP book ever created!! I loved it so much, never a boring moment when I read that book. EW and it's staff didn't exactly give DH a good rating while most everyone else did, so I'm not surprised that DH didn't make the list, but GoF did. Yeah, it was the turning point in the HP books, but DH was much darker, more deaths, the FINAL battle took place, romance...COME ON! BEST BOOK EVER, but not in there opinions. The HP series really should have been on there to begin with, but we should be happy at least one HP book made it on there...
I'm surprised the movies didn't even make the list at all! I am also surprised that Scarface wasn't even in the top 5, but that's a different fandom...
The EW magazine staff really needs to get their heads in order over there.
