The infamous return and escape of Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has made The Guardian's list
of top-ten best fake deaths in literature.
In the third part of the Potter roman-fleuve, Peter Pettigrew pretends that Sirius Black has killed him, cutting off one of his own fingers to make it seem that the rest of him has been blasted to atoms. For 12 years he adopts the guise of Ron Weasley’s pet rat, Scabbers. But the severed digit gives him away.

That's kinda cool. It did take take a bite of planing on Peter's part to pull it all off and then hide for so long without being found out.

I guess it is one of the most imaginative fake deaths I have heard of. It probably helps that he was a wizard and could get away with it more easily that way!!

Peter Pettigrew, I can't believe it. I hate him. Because of him, Sirius was wrongfully convicted and sent to Azkaban. I'm glad he got his in the end. Stupid rat.

Who would've thought that scabbers is actually an animagus wizard? (Before you've read PoA of course). That I think what puts Peter Pettigrew on the list. Congrats to JKRowling. That's another achivement for the HP series.

What an odd thing to make a list of! Sure, he definitely pwns a spot on the list, but.. honestly? Pretty soon they'll have a top-ten list of heroic uses of basilisk fangs in literature, or the ten most popular breeds of puppy amongst children in literature..
Anyways, congrats Pete. Couldn't have picked a better candidate myself.
