Steven Vander Ark's new novel, In Search of Harry Potter, a book about the different locations in Great Britian used in the Harry Potter series, has been approved for publishing by J.K. Rowling's lawyers. This coming after the recent trial banning a book co-written by Vander Ark that was ruled as copyright infringement.
Upon careful examination of the book, J.K. Rowling's lawyers have agreed that it can be published, barring that a few changes are made to the cover.

Hey that sounds like a pretty cool book. I always wondered if some of the places used were actually real or not..

Heh. I read Jo's testimony in the Lexicon case a couple weeks ago. It's interesting Steve's moved past that already and come up with something new and original. I really did think the online Lexicon was cool and useful, so I think it would be great if Jo and Steve could just put the whole Lexicon book mess behind them and have a cordial relationship now.

Sounds like it could be a cool book, but because of the whole trial that happened with him and Jo, I don't think I would buy it. I may just be bitter, because it is the same author...but oh well, he will not be getting my money!

It sounds like it would be a good book. I don't know if I will buy it becuase I have never bought any of those types of books [you know, the companion like books to HP]. So I don't know. Congrats Steve, on the book.

Well fair enough, clearly this book is more about the locations and not infringing copyright laws on this matter. It does sound interesting, because I've never been to England, and you can only guess sometimes!
People have got to make their money somehow!

I'm glad to see there was no problem with the publication of this book. Now all he has to do is add some of his own thoughts to the Lexicon and there will be no problem with that one either.
It never should have gotten to the point where the courts were involved but WB had to get their finger in the pie.
She never should have signed rights over to them in the first place, but I'm sure she didn't know exactly what she was getting herself into when she did. Thanks to them we have all learned a lesson in "greed is good".
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

I really don't want to buy it. He betrayed his fans and Jo for what he tried to do. He is still trying to make money off of Harry Potter. I wish people would stop making Harry Potter related books, it's getting old.

I am surprised that you have to get permission to do any work on Harry Potter now. It goes against the principles of scholarly research.
Consider that one day, a decade from now someone wants to do a book on the cultural impact and how Harry Potter has changed the world. Does it mean WB or JKR needs to permit it to be done? Or even be paid? If that's the case then some may consider it not worth the effort and just not do it. Harry Potter remains alive because people find new reasons to remain interested and this comes through discussion and maybe reinterpretation of themes of ideas.
The same thing happens in the sciences, especially with research in genetics. Once a company "owns" a gene then no one can do research on it without paying the company the right to do research. As a result nothing gets done and people suffer.
Personally, I see a similar thing happening if we allow this to happen in the literary world. People won't be allowed to discuss the books, unless permitted to, and they will loose interest. The books remain alive, for us and future generations, because we can discuss and re-interpret themes found within the pages.
I hope in their efforts to get as much money out of this and anyone they don't kill the golden egg laying goose. Only time will tell.

It sounds interesting but I don't think that I would buy it, he should put it on the Lexicon but seeing as how he wants to make some money.... I would have really liked the the Lexicon in book form I think that that would be cool and probably something that I would have considered buying-its a shame it got all worked up, and made into a big deal....

Well I think that it's a bit much of him to do that, the way where he insinuated that J.K. Rowling used his site and that because of him she was able to write the books.
So I think that putting out this book is bit like saying: "Well if you won't let me put out a hp encyclopedia then I'll just put this out about the movies.."
I don't think I'll buy it..
