'Half-Blood Prince' gets PG rating in the U.S. Popular (4321)

News comes today that the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie will be ratedopens in new window PG in the U.S. "for scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality" by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America).

The MPAAopens in new window rates PG as:

A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend. The PG rating indicates, in the view of the Rating Board, that parents may consider some material unsuitable for their children, and parents should make that decision.

The more mature themes in some PG-rated motion pictures may call for parental guidance. There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is scheduled for release on July 17, 2009. This will be the first Potter film since Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004 to be rated less than PG-13.

OK everybody. Calm down!
List of Movies with a PG-rating at are AWESOME:

1. Poltergeist
2. Jaws
3. Beetlejuice
4. Gremlins
5. Princess Bride
6. Runaway Bride
7. Remember the Titans
8. Star Wars
9. Chronicles of Narnia
10. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Those are just a few. And the first couple definitely have some questionable content. I think it's not so much about the themes, but how much they show of those themes. They can make something terrifying while maintaining a PG rating, just by the way they film it. I'm not going to worry until I see it. I love some PG rating movies.

MissPeachy (STALK!)

Yes, but there a great deal of us that are not happy to just settle for a diminished version of the stories we love so much. We don't want a dumbed down version of the scenes we loved from the book. This rating does NOT reflect passion for the story, it represents only WB's attempt to pull in as much GD money as possible rather than do the story justice.

When I see Harry use sectumsempra on Malfoy I don't want to see a nice birds and butterfies fairytale version, I bloody well want to see it how it is in the book, which means I want to see Malfoy bleeding to death and covered in blood and deep gashes, not covered in scratches or something stupid like that. That's why people are up in arms about this. Not because I'm sort of nutter, just because that's the story, that's how it happens, and I want to see the story in film and as true to the story as possible.

We're upset because know what it means, it means that the movie simply cannot do the book justice. You can't do this story justice without a rating of at least PG-13, preferably PG-14. In reality the content of the book, in places, would carry an R rating. I'm not suggesting that it should be rated R or anything like that, I'm just pointing out how far away a PG rating is from the reality of some of the book's content. So yeah, that's why people are not happy about this. We are passionate about the story, and those who are producing it so clearly aren't.

But don't mind me, I'm just rambling =)

I'm surprised this is only PG! I thought the scenes at the end of half blood prince would be pretty violent and scary. But maybe they will be milder than i thought.

MissPeachy, you have to remember, however, that the movies you mentioned were made in the '70's, '80's, and '90's. Now, the MPAA is really strict because of the numerous public watchdog groups. =/

well, I for one don't really like this. The book to me seems like a PG-13 book right??? This makes me think they must have left out some great and important parts of the book in the movie...... we'll see....

What my main point was that you can show parts in a tasteful even scarier way with a PG rating. The inferi hand coming up or their shapes shadowed can be horrifying. Sectumsempra can still be bloody but available for 12 year olds who want to go. It may be ok that's all I'm saying.

WHAT???? I'm seriously shocked. I was really looking forward to HBP, especially after how bad OotP was (come on, it was terrible). I really hoped this installment would finally be as dark as its ink-and-paper counterpart, but that's just impossible to do in a PG movie. How did this happen?? *Sigh* Maybe it's time to give up on the movies completely. I want Cuaron back : (

It's not the actual audience intended for a PG rating that we should be worried about. Kids are (unfortunately) always going to be associated with HP

It is what have they toned down to make it a PG that we should be worried about.

I now look very stupid, after telling a lot of people that HBP book is not intended for children..

Was lookng forward to the darker themes and the fantasy violence..

I dont think its going to be less dark then the previous ones. Oh well, well just hav to wait and see. But until then, just chill...

JAYSTARR says:

PG is just saying that the parent should be there to address the child. If the child does not understand certain things. Such as why is Ron drinking beer or why is there so much hate being displayed.

PG does not intend that there will be drugs, profanity, or nudity. That is rated R for Restriction, and there are some children that wind up seeing those rated R's at home or at the movies without their parents....

So, why make a big fuss about PG, when you have to worry more for your kids about R & X.

Cheers!

PG? well I think it will please all audiences anyway, so I daresay the rating will have much of an effect. But does this mean it will have less of an impact at the death scene? I hope not, I hope they do the book justice!

A PG rating! What happened? Wasn't GoF that had a PG-13 rating? Maybe it is because of the violence. I do not think that there is any in the movie. I do not care as long a the WB does not kill us with a further date. Hello. WB, I am still reeling!

Why does WB hates us.? Why?

I do not inherently have anything against PG movies but come on GOF could have been PG easily and they gave it a PG-13 and now HBP with is 8 to 10 times darker of not more than GOF and they are giving it a PG.

So I know there is not going to be a battle of Hogwarts which is the climax of the book.

I bet the infiri(sp?) aren't dead bodies they are the little old lady down the street who bakes you cookies.
