In a new interview
with Vanity Fair, David Yates discusses new techniques and styles he is using for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, difficult decisions they make when penning the script, plans post - Harry Potter, and much more.
[Difficult choices made] on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
It’s just edgier. It’s a little rawer. It’s more contemporary. It feels more modern. Shooting in the way we’ve been shooting, doing a lot of hand-held camera work, all that stuff, I’ve never got a call from the studio. They just phone up or email and say we love the dailies even though I am doing things that feel very not Harry Potter. So I feel I have a freedom and the elbowroom to do what I feel the story requires.
So you’re hearkening back to your gritty days of State of Play?
Yeah, indeed. In Harry Potter Seven, part One, very much so. But, of course, Hallows part Two brings that fantasy world back in full cinemascope. It’s full of dragons, and big wizard battles, and magic. To keep the thing interesting for me as a filmmaker, I want to serve the wonderful stories Jo has given us but I need to move it around a bit. I can’t feel that I am making the same film. Tonally, I need to shake it up a bit. Like Half-Blood Prince had a lot more humor in it than Order of the Phoenix and that was important for me, and I think it was important for the audience to not get the same journey. And Hallows part One will feel very different than Half-Blood Prince.

Can't wit to see what he does with DH, as I have some minor conflicted feelings about HBP.
Saw it for the second time today and still wish they had stuck a bit closer to the book.

I agree with both of you, I do wish they had stuck closer to the book, and i did not like the burrow scene! It should be interesting with this next movie i hope its as close to the book as possible. If you watch the first and second movies then read the book they are almost word for word to the book, i hope the seventh one are like that!

I hated the Burrow scene totally unnecessary. WIll be going to the IMAX this Saturday to see it in 3D hoping I will like it more 2nd time around. It would always be nice if they stuck with the book more. Hated DD's death scene didn't feel it was given proper respect. I am worried that Yates is doing "un" Harry Potter things with DHs

Good interview...I have really high hopes for both parts of Deathly Hallows. I think they will probably end up being the best of the whole series.

Hmm, I hope he doesn't do anything too drastically different! Sure it will turn out great, though. I'm really looking forward to it! But it will be kind of sad, too!

I'm still up in the air about where they are going with the films. Too much of the explaination was left out about the hourcruxes.
Just like with PoA, there was no reference to who was responcible for making the Marauders Map. No knowledge that Lupin knew what it was and that he was one of the makers. It left a lot of the meaning out that could have tied back into Snape in the later movies.
I'm beginning to think that the continuity that is needed to tie all of the films together will not be there in the end.
Blessings! Hecate3fold!

I think he will do good in DH. I mean they already did the good part by splitting it into two films, more harry potter!

So far I like David Yates as a director but I do agree with most of you that I didn't like the burrow scene. Why burn down the burrow? Now what is going to happen in DH? Bill and Fleur were supposed to get married there when Death Eaters attack and Harry, Ron and Hermione flee. If the burrow is gone, what are they going to do now? They are making DH into two films so that they can keep to the book and be as acurate as they can but how when they destroyed something in a previous film?

I love that he recognizes how different the book is from start to finish and that he wants to genuinely capture that. Yates has brought a definite sense of reality to Harry Potter that the other directors skirted away from. I like this different feel.

Um, guys... they're supposed to be WIZARDS, remember? The burrow will be there. Also, might I remind you all that Yates is not the screenwriter.

marauderette says:
I'm probably in the minority when I saw I LOVED half blood prince. Even the burrow scene. I understand why they wanted to do it--everyone in the movie is trying to emphasize that a war is happening, but how does that feel immediate to the audience? It's just a lot of exposition until you *see* the war affecting characters the audience love and identify with.
I am excited to see how they do DH. I am still concerned with how they are going to make it into 2 films. It just feels like its going to be 4 hours of camping.

Interesting! It sounds like their really making it huge.I just hope when he said that they are giving him an "elbowroom",that they wouldn't put unnecessary scenes that are not in the book and cut particular scenes that is important, like their doing in the previous films.I'm really, really hoping that they will give justice to the finale of this amazing series.
