Close friend to J.K. Rowling, Ian Rankin, has reported to BBC Five Live Radio
that Rowling is hard at work on the Harry Potter Encyclopedia.
According to Rankin, last time he saw her, she was busy drawing up family trees. Although he did mention that it was quite some time ago, and he hadn't heard any definitive plans from Rowling.
We will be sure to update you if any more news on the Encyclopedia becomes available, but as of yet no timeline for the release has been set.

Great if true. She did mention in an interview a while back that she might consider an encyclopedia with the proceeds going to charity. All we can do is wait.

This will make a great addition to any persons Harry Potter collection. I have an unofficial HP encyclopedia but it came out inbetween GoF and OotP and the stuff in it is mostly from mythology about magic and only a few things are directly from HP. But I hope JK keeps writing these HP universe books. I love Fantastic Beasts, Quidditch Through the Ages, and Beedle the Bard. But I have always been dying to read books like Hogwarts, A History and A History of Magic... by Bathilda Bagshot of course!

Well this is exciting to learn. I have read the books quite a bit and would still like some of the more 'English' terms explained. I would love some family trees if they go back several centuries.

That's great that an official encyclopedia is in the works. I only just bought the boxset online, specifically at this site: http://www.mediancs.com/rd_p?p=191613&t=9534&a=708-HarryPotter&gift=708 - and I've run into a few parts where I would have liked a bit more information. (Although I can't remember them at this second...)

If she IS working on the encycopedia, I wouldn't count on it being published anytime soon. The "powers that be" will probably plan on it after the last movie is released and the "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" opens ... just to keep the HP craze going for as long as possible.

Having an HP encyclopedia would be great but I'm supposing the encyclopedia will have pictures since it'll be kind of funny if it was all just in writing.
