James Downey, a Harry Potter fan and book conservator, has started has started a world-wide effort to petition the Nobel Prize Committee in favor of their awarding JK Rowling the Nobel Prize for Literature
in 2004:
Has anyone else done as much to re-invigorate reading in the last decade? Has anyone else engaged the imaginations of so many children and adults around the world? Has anyone else so captivated millions with a moral story of good and evil, the pain of growing up parentless, the magic of personal choice? Has anyone else done as much to benefit mankind with literature?
No.
And for these reasons, join us in a world-wide campaign to convince the Nobel Prize Committee to recognize Ms. Rowling with the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004 for her latest book The Order of the Phoenix. Tell the Committee (politely) that you think she should receive the prize. Tell your friends about this website, spread the word about this effort in chatrooms and discussion groups. We can do this, if we all work together.
A noble cause (pun intended), and rightly deserved in this editor's opinion. Even if you don't like Harry Potter, you can't ignore the fact that more people are reading thanks to JK Rowling.

Here's what I wrote: Prize Committee,
It has come to my attention that someone thinks that J.K. Rowling should be nominated for receieving a Nobel Prize. I agree with this. Ms. Rowling has brought books back into the lives of children and adults. Not only Harry Potter books have invigorated people into reading. Because of Harry Potter, more people are reading books like Lord of the Rings, too. Rowling has brought people from all different backgrounds, all over the world together -- online and offline, because they love to discuss the books. Children's vocabularies are growing bigger everyday because of the descriptive, insightful words she uses in her books. She deserves the Prize even more so than anyone else. She has brought literature back into the world, through her wonderful, captivating books.

x WaddiWasi x...that was put so eloquently. As soon as I manage to put my sentences together well enough to sound Big and Important to the Nobel Bigwigs (which will be five minutes from now LOL) I am going to give them a piece of my mind (wait...I need what mind I have left...I'm losing it anyway LOL). But in all seriousness, it would be so awesome to have JKR win the prize. Not only has JKR managed to put books back into the hearts- and therefore hands- of children, but she has created a world for adults as well. I mean, what other book(s) have been so loved the world over? As we saw from book parties before the release of OotP, there were kids across the world, in nearly every (if not every) time zone awaiting the next adventure of Harry. What recent literature can compare? As more and more people are realizing...Harry's books aren't even "children's" books anymore; they've become fiction for everyone. Speaking of books, I've just about written one here so I guess I'll sign off. I've got to go petition for JKR!

Aravis- Thank you ;) I tried to think of myself as one of the committee people.. that always helps. I don't think anyone here really has much of a mind left, lol. I know I don't! JayKay deserves the prize. She has taken years to write perfect pieces of fiction.. and will probably take many more. She works herself to death, and is very much underappreciated.

Yeah, I got that e-mail too. I guess it turns out we're not Big and Important enough...we happen to be Small and Insignificant. BUT...if someone finds out how we can get our pleas (...blackmail...whatever it takes...lol j/k!) heard by the Bigwigs Who Vote, please post. Even the Small and Insignificant can make their voices heard if there are enough of them!

In the meantime, I might spam them to give them a piece of my mind! I got an e-mail too, and I am pretty hacked off. Just because we're not Big and Important doesn't mean we're Small and Insignificant! I feel like letting the centaurs getting ahold of them ;)

Eclektic- No, I looked at the list of prizewinners for Lterature and the only name I recognized was Ernest Hemmingway, I forgot the other one I knew of. Children's literature (even though HP isn't necesserily that anymore) deserves to be considered.

When I was teaching, her books got even stubborn readers to start reading and got childrens imaginations going.
Since her books have touched so many children and adults and boosted the imagination and literary skills of those who read them I think she should be nominated.
Go J.K. Rowling!

Wow. This is a great idea. JKR is truly an excellent writer, and wouldn't it be great if she was honored in such a way? Can you imagine how many people all around the world would support this decision? Wow. I tell you, I hope that committee considers JKR. She deserves some real credit for the fantastic stories that she wrote. Sure, they may be a bit different from what other winners have written, but wouldn't that be exactly the point? A little variety? And besides that, JKR has gotten people to read in a way that people haven't in a long time. Before HP, when was the last time people would willingly stand in line for literally hours to buy the lastest book? JKR got people around the world, people of literally all ages, in a technology driven world, to sit down and read. Not only that, but she has inspired other people, because of her success and excellence, to write. And maybe some day soon a new author will come along with some new best selling book, and say that JK Rowling was their inspiration to write. JKR is awesome, and needs some credit. Not that she doesn't have it - I mean, millions and millions of fans could count as getting credit. But the Nobel Prize in Literature could be the next step.
