Director Richard Donneropens in new window, producer Steven Spielbergopens in new window have purchased the rights to a sequel to the hit family film 'Goonies' and are trying to get Warner Bros. to greenlight the project, according to MTVopens in new window. The original movie was written by Chris Columbusopens in new window:

The sequel would reunite the original cast, which included Sean Astinopens in new window, Corey Feldmanopens in new window, Josh Brolinopens in new window and others, with a new bunch of suburban kids, Donner said.

"The new group is called the Groonies, because they happen to live in a town where [Data], the Chinese kid, lives ... and he's got an electronics repair shop and all the kids hang out at his shop. He has this Chinese accent and he calls the Goonies the Groonies, and so the new kids call themselves the Groonies, until they get into a situation where the old Goonies have to save the new Groonies, or vice versa."

Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter films, first found success writing screenplays in Hollywood. He wrote several for Spielberg, including the 1984 comedy Gremlins and the first Goonies, before going on to direct his first film, Adventures in Babysitting.

Sean Astin, who was the main character in Goonies, has had a starring role in fellow fantasy film series Lord of the Rings as Samwise Gamgee, Frodo's faithful friend.
