Harry Potter and the Fang of the Serpent  Popular (5111)  Comments (58)
No, it's not the title of JK Rowling's next book, but rather eight-year-old Dezi Gallegos' story of Harry Potter's latest adventures, which his father mailed to Rowling's publisher earlier this year.

ESPN tries its hand at Potter fan fiction  Comments (21)
"Look! Cork!" Draco Malfoy shouted, cruely snuffing out his hand-rolled cigarette on the reproductive organs of a small white bunny that had misfortunately hippity-hopped within his reach. "Potter corked his broom! That's why he's able to fly it so fast! He cheats!"

Teen author started with Harry Potter fan fiction  Comments (7)
Aimee Carter, 17, has special reasons to be excited about the release of the fifth Harry Potter book. Rowling's writings enticed Aimee Carter at age 12 to take the first steps toward becoming a published author. In December 2002, at age 16, she published "Phoenix Ashes" - a story dealing with delicate issues in a mature manner far beyond the author's chronological years.

Potter fans produce Potter fiction  Comments (16)
In the past few years, a curious literary genre known as "fan fiction" has been flourishing. The term refers to all manner of vignettes, short stories and novels based on the universes described in popular books, TV shows and movies. The explosion of these part-original, part-borrowed works has set authors of fan fiction against some media companies in a battle to redefine the line between consumers' right to "fair use" and copyright holders' rights to control their intellectual property.

Stern Magazine writes about Harry Potter fanfic  Comments
An article in the new Stern magazine reports on Harry Potter fanfic, covering both English and German stories. You can use Babelfish to read a slightly pathetic translation. The article says, in part (thanks to Tom Wieczorek for the translation): The amateur authors spin their own tales from Rowlings books: those who like the greasy-haired git of a teacher Snape, pair him in later years with the star pupil Hermione and give the two a child. In another story Harry bit the dust and dates the toilet ghost Myrtle in the kingdom-come. The article also provides links to various fanfic sites, including FictionAlley, which has a section for links to German-language fanfics, Fanfiction.net, which allows uploads of fics written in German, and two sites that contain primarily German fanfics, German Harry Potter Fanfiction and German translations of fics originally written in English.

NPR archive link and auction radio interview  Comments
If you missed the NPR segment about fanfiction, you can catch it here - it includes our editor Megan calling herself a dork (which in this edtior's opinion makes it not-to-be-missed. :) Seriously, it describes the world of fanfiction really well - here's Megan's quotage about what inspires people to write HP-verse fanfic:[J.K. Rowling] herself has said that she has boxes and notebooks and folders filled with information that we'll never see in the books. That just strikes everybody's imagination and gets their curiosity going...you get curious like that and you get a computer in front of you, or a pen, and you're doomed. Really excellent piece. In other news, a while back Cristin sent us an MP3 of the interview I did with Spin1038 for the auction and I keep forgetting to link to it - download it here if you like. Once the holidays are over we will fill in all the rest of our auction coverage (donor lists, etc.), so stay tuned.

Talking about Harry Potter fan fiction on National Public Radio  Comments
A member of the forums sent in a good overview of the show on NPR where they discussed Harry Potter and fan fiction: I was listening to NPR tonight (about 4:45 pm central) and they just aired a story by Margot Adler about HP fan fiction. It was a nice story, and featured Megan Morrison who writes under the name Arabella who heads the HP fanfic website thesugarquill.net. They explained about what fan fiction is, who writes it and how the website works. They also said it's a harmless hobby and really sorta fun. It was a nice story, complimentary of fan fiction, Harry Potter and the fans who enjoy it all. The point was made that helping young writers is one of the main aims of the website. They even mentioned the beta pairing and editing that all their stories go through. They also mentioned JKR stated in an interview that she was flattered by all the fan fiction. And that for us adult HP fans enjoying Harry Potter is a secret obsession. Margot stated that fan fiction can also lead to peo
