Putting a stop to endless speculation as to whether recently published pictures from the set of Prisoner of Azkaban were rehearsal shots or not, the official UK movie site has put up a few of the ones we've seen, labeling them as images from the upcoming theatrical film
. And yes, they are wearing normal clothes, not robes. Take a deep breath.
Some comments that highlight the great divide this issue has caused are well put by HPANA member Aravis:
I am not going to get over the fact that the characters aren't wearing robes! Some people have pointed out that in the other movies occasionally the trio wasn't wearing robes. Well I've been rereading PoA and in the Shrieking Shack scene the trio were definitely wearing robes. Also, when Hermione attacks Draco, they are in between classes so both of them (with Crabbe and Goyle) would at the very least be wearing a school uniform. I mean, looking at the pics I could be looking at any upcoming cheap teen flick.
Their robes are part of the wizarding world, which brings me to another point: the pure-blood wizards don't usually own muggle clothing at all! I mean, in GoF wizards were wearing all sort of muggle clothing that didn't match or the guys were in dresses or something because they didn't usually wear muggle clothing! Now, Hermione and Harry live with muggles, and Ron's dad works in the Muggle Dept., but Draco would rather be caught dead than wear muggle clothing and suddenly he's dressed like he's walked straight out of GQ.
I say we need to see Cuarón's final product before we judge.

I have to say I will be extremely vexed if in the final product they walk around in muggle clothing the whole time. Not only with Cuaron but with Columbus and everyone else who let that happen. They wear robes not muggle clothing!!!

I agree - I try not to let the movies bother me too much, since I knew in advance they would be totally inferior to the books, but since JKR made a point in several of the books how the wizards DO NOT dress like muggles, I'm surprised that she let them 'dress down' so much in the 1st two movies. It will bother me if they are trotting around in muggle clothes the whole time. But I'll just have to put up with it I guess. We are talking hollywood here, they are not known for logic or consistancy at the best of times.

As for the robes, we all know the "poetic license" that WB has taken with the Harry Potter series thus far. I do believe, however, that the movie will be the best one thus far.
I've been told by a few people that WB is trying to keep the new robes as a bit of a surprise (of course, we have seen them from a photo a few months ago).

Did JKR lose some control with this film? No "school uniforms"? Was this Cuaron's idea? I note Warner Bros. site with the photos lists him as "previously directing A Little Princess and Great Expectations". What happened to Y Tu Mama Tambien -- definitely an R rated film.
I still think it will be the best so far of the series, as was the book.

Darn! There went my assumption about these being rehearsal pics. Well, I will still be seeing the movie on opening day, but I sincerely hope they will be wearing robes at appropriate times. It does disturb me a little to see Crabbe in Muggle clothing - I couldn't tell if what Draco was wearing were robes or Muggle clothes though. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

If nothing, the saving grace may well be that John Williams is composing the score again for this one. I was surprised to learn he didn't actually "write" the music for Chamber of Secrets - he "produced" it. Which may explain the grossly exaggerated finale.
My feeling is that Cuaron will show us raw acting at it's finest, and Williams can write beautiful, emotionally evocative tunes. I'm pretty sure my eyes will leak a bit when Harry performs his Patronus and thinks he sees his dad.

I wonder what Jk rowling is going to do about this i wonder if she even cares. maybe it isn't affecting her as much as it is her fans but you know what hopefully the movie will be good anyway. i hope.

When I first saw these pictures, my first thought was that JK has lost her position of control on the set of the movie. I really do wonder if she is still supervising the filming. I also don't like the fact that their clothes are update with today's fashions...i.e. Hermione's cute little belt and hoodie. This book took place in 1993 not 2003.

Like Draco for example, he looks like Aaron Carter and Dudley is supposed to be blonde. The clothes don't even look right. I thought Harry wasn't given hand-me-down clothes from Dudley. Those clothes look like they fit Dan pretty well. Hermione is wearing a belt that has just come in style. She has enough sense to show off the fashion at the premeires, not during the movie. I just hope that the movie will be good. I don't think it was very smart to change directors. They complain that the kids are growing up, then they go and make it delayed by a year. I hope this all works out.

I believe that one of the more valid criticisms of the films thus far has been that they've added very little to the books. That is, that they tried so hard to match the details in the book that they didn't entirely succeed in making a movie that truly stands on its own. [For the record, I personally own and love both films.] Granted, there are details and characters in the stories that must be followed carefully for them to be able to develop the entire series. Rowling is crafty at introducing plot points and characters that seem arbitrary at first, but become quite significant later. I believe that the films can be faithful to the books, without being slaves to the books.
I'm very much looking forward to what Alfonso Cuaron does with Prisoner. The fact that he's been able to bring controversy to the table with 10 months till release appeals greatly to my mischievous side. Mischief making, after all, plays a significant role in this particular novel ("I solemnly swear I'm up to no good!") Choosing an independent filmmaker that's bold, brash, and controversial seems almost logical for this film.
I believe that the wardrobe is a moot point. For some characters, especially the adults, the clothing helps build the character. As far as deciding when the students are in robes or muggle clothing, I can't see the filmmakers' choices having a life or death impact on the story. Rowling herself makes the subject a little vague. At Christmas, the Weasley's are traditionally in sweaters (are they wearing them over robes? Doubt it.) In book 5, Harry talks about choosing clothes carefully for his Valentine's Day trip to Hogsmeade with Cho, so apparently he wasn't wearing robes. In book 4 at the World Cup the student age wizards are said to be better at dressing like muggles than their parents. And I would like to challenge anyone to come up with any evidence for the idea that Draco wouldn't be caught dead in muggle clothing. I can buy that he hates muggles, but even Death Eaters themselves could find it useful to blend in with a muggle crowd from time to time.

It won't be so bad. They can't wear robes all the time. As far as Malfoys hating everything muggle. Lucius's clothes under his cape in the Chamber of Secrets movie weren't too wizard. Maybe with special effects Malfoys clothes will shimmer to look different then muggle clothes, but it really doesn't matter does it? Almost everyone will still want to see the movie.

If they're going to Hogsmead, maybe they'd throw on Muggle clothes (and they may have moved the Draco/Hermione scene to accomidate movie plotting, so it may not happen between classes). But the only person in the trio who should have decent Muggle clothes is Hermione. All Harry's muggle clothes should look like they once belonged to Dudley, correct? Not to mention EVERYTHING Ron owns should be a used hand me down, with the exception of his yearly Christmas Maroon Jumper. And what basically looks like something out of the actor's home wardrobe does not have the same effect. And I don't remember a mall in Diagon Alley, the pure blood kids should absolutly not look like they shop at the gap.
The muggle gear images just makes it look more like the Dan, Rupert, and Emma movie and less like a Harry Potter movie, but if they've done a decent job with the film it MAY work.

I think the fantasy aspect of harry potter makes it so appealing to people(as it does for me), a whole different, exciting and mysterious world juxaposed to privet drive, the normal boring world that we live in. i hope they won't take that away in order to make the movie more "realistic". Cuaron is tricky. i loved the "little princess" but "y tu mama tambien", i was not a big fan of. I'm not worried though, you really can't go with story like Harry Potter.

I'm quite sure even Wizards are familiar with general clothing-- trousers, jumpers/sweaters, etc. I'm quite sure you can pick them up in a place like Diagon Alley, but the clothes look a bit (especially with Dan and Emma) like something that fits the actor not the character, but Ron's sweater looks in place as a hand me down. Besides that, PoA in suppose to be set around 1993 and not 2003. And Wizards have been shown to be quite ignorant of the day to day of the muggle world, so there kids wearing the latest styles of the muggle world doesn't make much sense. Remember how the celebrating wizards stood out the day Harry triumphed over you-know-who. I do believe Vernon noted they were walking around wearing Robes. While some have more of a sense of muggle habits than others, if a guy is going to put on a woman's dress at an event where they're expected to blend then it has been displayed that the sense of it is somewhat limited in general.
However, the movie doesn't have to be in the book timeline or be the book exactly, timelines for book-to-movie translations are shifted all the time. Harry and Ron weren't wearing Robes when they went to Hagrid's in the CoS movie and went stomping throught the woods, nor were the kids wearing them when they went under the trap door in SS/PS (even though in both cases the clothes seemed, for lack of a better word, plain and in place). But the idea that uniforms are only required for class-hours only is also in place with movie canon and until I know exactly where the muggle-clothes scenes fit, I'm not going to throw a fit. Until I see a bunch of kids who look like they're in the latest teen-flick wearing Muggle clothes in class, I'm not going to panic. But I can't pretend it doesn't bother me that the available pics mostly, don't feature the Hogwarts Uniform.

Unless JK Rowling directs the movies herself, there are only going to be "interpretations" of the books regardless of who directs them. The only person who has the most in-depth understanding of HP is Rowling herself. What we see on-screen is an interpretation of the books insted.
